As the emperor, Technoblade was fine with everyone knowing where he lived or what he did, it came with the job, but the one thing he didn't want public was his love life. That's why he was wearing a disguise when he met the cute waiter in a cafe a few blocks from the town center. At first it didn't matter, a bit of light flirting here or there wouldn't hurt anyone's trust, but as the days went by and the two met more and more outside of the cafe, Techno started to realize his mistake.

The first thing that drew him in was the waiter's fun, charismatic attitude that always made him smile as his worries washed away. Soon after, the sense of humor and slight attitude caused his heart to melt. When he first heard the breathless wheeze of the waiter's true laugh, Techno realized just how badly he had fallen, there was no turning back. But it was on a couch, in a party crowded with people they were ignoring, as the waiter, Clay as he knew him, started to talk about his goal in life, how he was working hard and saving up every day to be able to take a chance and start a small nation of his own, that's when the guilt set in.

It took a few days of sleepless nights, but Techno finally worked up the courage to tell him. They weren't in an official relationship, hadn't even been on an official date yet, so it certainly wasn't too late to tell him, but it still felt awful having to come clean about his lie.

On a secluded park bench surrounded by gently falling snowflakes, Techno watched as Clay went through a long series of emotions right in front of him. He was tensed and nervous as he waited for a response, a response that would either break his heart or send him to the moon. Then, as he glanced away, he felt a hand reach up and brush away a bit of snow from his head. Turning back, Clay's face was warm and understanding. "Don't worry, soon I'll be famous too, so we're practically the same." Techno laughed, relief pouring from every motion as pent up tears escaped, causing unnecessary worry. They set up a first date, and the rest was history.

Eventually the only thing keeping them from living together was the publicity of Techno's castle, however, that wasn't the only barrier in their relationship. "I've been thinking." Clay started one day as they were cuddled up on his couch.

"About?"

"About the future you know, what I'm going to do, what we're going to do."

"Does this mean you've saved enough?"

"Not just that, it's also that treaty you've been drafting with the other nations. Once everyone's united you won't be needed anymore, especially with Phil."

"What are you suggesting?"

"Run away with me, run away and we can create a new nation, the one I've been dreaming of."

"It's not that simple, I have other responsibilities even with the treaty. I haven't even won the potato war yet."

"But I don't know how much longer I can wait." Clay looked at him with a determination he understood perfectly. They were both stubborn, they would've been separated by it sooner or later, even though the thought alone made his heart ache.

Still, he smiled as he said, "Well I guess we'll say goodbye soon." Clay gave an understanding smile, then leaned in for a sad kiss.

The next few days they spent as much time together as possible, enjoying each other while they still could. Then, once Clay was ready, he left. Techno spent a few nights with a heavy heart, but their breakup was inevitable and he still had responsibilities. Once the treaty was signed, things settled down, but his energy was focused on the potato war he'd started.

Over the course of a few months, he watched as his friends from other nations, Tommy, Fit, Wilbur, eventually all left the area while he continued to farm potatoes. Soon, it was just him, Phil, and a potato crown.
