Most of the time, Techno loved that his twin got into the same career path as him. It kept them emotionally close and gave them plenty to talk about, not that they particularly needed more reasons to chat. Sometimes though, in the quiet spaces in between life's bigger events, it hurt.
They were both pretty popular, Techno was slightly more famous actually, but Techno was good at getting the job done, he was one of the best in fact. Wilbur wasn't. Skill wise he was probably below average, but he was popular because of his personality and creativity. He was charming and fun and the type that everyone gravitates to. And that's something that Techno didn't have. And it hurt, to not have people acknowledge him for him, just what he could do.
When he brought it up with Wilbur, he was instantly consoled. His twin brother lavished him with compliments until Techno went completely red, but it fell a bit flat. Of course his brother liked him, they were family. But despite it all he kept working, if self doubt was going to bring him down, it would've done so a long time ago.
It was on a day he felt such things that he was scrolling through his official email. It made him feel better sometimes. Among all the advertisement inquiries there was a good chunk of fan mail, wishful little kids asking him to join their teams, rambles about his coolest encounters, and one that was a little different. It started much like the others.
"Dear Technoblade,
Hi, you're really cool! Could you join me in a competition I'm doing next month?"
He got a few offers like this every other day.
"I've always looked up to you, and I'd be overjoyed to be on a team with you!"
Flattery, though he was sure it was true, everyone likes winning.
"Not only are you really good, you're cool and funny and I just love listening as I'm doing other stuff, it's like I have a friend with me."
...
"I know you probably won't say yes, if you even read this at all, but I just want you to know how much I like you! Keep it up!
Love,
Dream"
Before he knew it, Techno was wiping a tear from his cheek. He had no idea what even made him cry, but he felt incomprehensible relief. Against his better judgment, he looked the guy up. It was irresponsible to actually talk to him, but he wanted to know what he could about this weirdo who doesn't even watch the main draw of his content.
But after finding out that this random guy was incredibly good and also building a following, albeit slowly, Techno emailed him back. It was awkward at first, trying to be friends but not wanting to share any personal details, but they got through it and connected way more than Techno ever hoped.
"Oh my gosh you're so hot." Dream said when they met up for the first time.
"What? No I'm not." Techno immediately responded. It wasn't even self deprecation this time, he had always know that his wide head and rolls of fat weren't considered conventionally attractive. Sure, he liked how he looked, and he put thought into his fashion sense, but no one else cared, that's just how the world worked. If anything, the man in front of him was the hot one, sharp eyes that sparkled with the green of the sea, a defined jaw that looked carved out of marble, his mouth parted in surprise showing of the transcendent pink of his lower lip, all with the same slender but firm physique that Wilbur had.
"Don't sell yourself short man, you've got tons of attractive qualities." Dream said after the short but notable pause in conversation.
"Really?" It came out more weak and desperate than Techno had intended, and he was about to clear his throat as a distraction, but he was frozen in place when he saw Dream's smile.
"Yeah, you're cool and funny and sarcastic, but always kind and generous, with a soft spot for anything cute and small. You're selfless and observant and can turn every bad situation into something to laugh about. I, for one, like absolutely everything about you!"
Heat rushed to Techno's face and his eyebrows twitched with embarrassment. He wanted to take it back and escape this awkward situation, but clenching his fist with resolve, he said something else. "Thank you." Dream let out a tiny chuckle through closed lips. "Seriously, it's nice to know that people other than my family like me for who I am and not just what I can do."
Before he had time to register the look on Dream's face he was pulled into a hug. Techno leaned forward to nestle himself in Dream's cozy warmth. He reached out and wrapped his arms around Dream's comforting frame, letting himself drown his stress in the friendly visage. Dream started gently brushing his hair with his fingers. The delicate, lazy strokes making it feel like everything was okay. "I love you." Dream eventually whispered with impenetrable resolve.
"I love you too."
