"We're going to find out sooner or later." Wilbur taunted Techno.
                              "No you're not."
"Stop bugging him, if doesn't want to tell you, he won't tell you." Phil begged.
"No, I agree with Wilbur, I'm going to find out if it's the last thing I do." Tommy urged.
Techno sighed, still straight faced. Just because everyone could turn into animals, didn't mean that they had too, he didn't understand people who were obsessed with the subject. Instead, he continued walking across the college campus, trying to change the subject.
Dream watched as a bluebird chased around a lemur, always staying just out of reach. Frantic chirps and wails came from the animals as Dream laughed along. Suddenly, the lemur shapeshifted back into Sapnap, who grabbed the bluebird as he did. "Gotcha!"
The bird's chirps became more frantic as he was set down and reverted to George. "What the heck, Sapnap, that's cheating."
"No it's not." They continued squabbling as Dream looked on, smiling fondly on his friends.
"You should play with us sometime." George commented.
"Haha, if I joined, neither of you would stand a chance." Dream smirked. The other two rolled their eyes, knowing they wouldn't get much more than that. "Come on, we need to get to class."
The three made their way across campus to their English class, joking on the way. In English, they were asked to get into pairs. The trio looked at each other intently, before they suddenly all went to touch their noses.
"I think it was Dream." Sapnap called.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure Dream was last." George agreed.
"Aw, come on." Dream complained, accepting his loss.
As he looked around the classroom, he noticed most people were in groups and he didn't recognize anyone. Even the people who were usually stragglers had paired up. Then he noticed a kinda cute boy in a red and white letterman jacket looking awkwardly around the class. He walked up to the stranger. "You don't have a partner, do you? My name's Dream."
Techno looked up at his classmate in the green hoodie. His smiling face and light hair helped ease some of the nervousness. "Techno. Nice to meet you."
They sat down next to each other and started the assignment, swapping phone numbers so they could finish later. Dream rejoined his friends and Techno went to meet Tommy outside.
Techno looked around for a bit before going on his phone. All was silent, all was still as people thinned out.
"BOO!" Tommy jumped out, right in front of Techno.
Techno's eyes widened and he blinked a few times, but other than that, he didn't react. "Hey Tommy."
"Aw, what? That didn't scare you?" Tommy whined.
"You were trying to scare me?" Techno quipped.
"I wanted to see your animal form, I thought it would work."
"Bruh, a stiff breeze would scare me more than that."
Tommy pouted, continuing to complain as they walked back to the dorms.
The next Tuesday, he received a text from an unknown number.
???: Are you free to work on the project tonight?
                              ???: This is Dream btw
                              Techno: sure. library?
Dream: I can be there at 7
                              Techno: k
Short and simple, all business, just how he liked it. He walked to the library on time, cautious of the darkening sky.
Dream arrived first, texting his partner where he was. He saw him enter with a loose pink hoodie on, looking around. Dream couldn't help but smile as he waved. They got their work done efficiently, both were pretty good at the subject, though Dream noticed Techno seemed a bit rushed. The moment they finished the project, he was out of his chair and out the door, leaving no room for small talk. Dream shrugged, slightly dejected before taking his papers and going out himself. As he approached the door, he noticed a torrent of rain he somehow hadn't before. By the looks of it, it could soak him in seconds. There was even thunder in the distance. He hadn't brought an umbrella, so wary of the rain, Dream stayed as close to the edges of the building as possible. As he turned a corner, he saw a white and brown stripped cat curled up and shivering in the alleyway. His instincts told him exactly what to do.
It was worse than Techno feared. Even though he had pushed himself to finish as soon as possible, the rain was pouring down when he stepped outside. He shied away, creeping along the wall, wondering if he should make a break for it. Suddenly, thunder struck, and Techno couldn't hold back anymore. He popped into his animal form, a medium sized cat, and curled up, scared out of his mind and hoping the sound would go away.
Then, a dog appeared around the corner. A fairly small dog, all fluffy and white, came up and licked his fur, curling up next to him and resting his head on Techno's torso. Techno's heart leaped as soon as he saw them. He had always been a dog person, so being with them made the thunder much more tolerable. The dog licked him every so often, a nice reminder that they were there, all the way until the thunder was a distant memory.
The rain was still pounding, though the thunder seemed to have stopped. He sighed to himself. It was comfortable as a cat, no social restrictions or judgement. But it was getting dark and going out in the rain as a cat would only guarantee his books would get soaked. Stepping out of the cuddle pile, he transformed back, only passingly aware of the shocked white dog.
Dream watched as the cat he'd comforted transformed into the cute boy he shared an English class with. What to do now. He hadn't shown his animal form to anyone outside of his family, but it was only polite. And he felt he could trust Techno.
He transformed back while Techno was stretching, loosening his muscles. Dream tapped him on the shoulder. Techno visibly jumped, shocked and embarrassed at the new development. Dream watched as he threw his bag under him and dashed into the rain, the sounds of his feet splashing echoing behind him.
Techno's face was soaked, but he didn't care. His mind was a roller coaster and it was far from stopping. Why had he been so stupid, of course that dog was a human. He had been so cautious all his life and now his form had been revealed through a careless mistake. He didn't know Dream all that well, so who knows what he would do with this information. He knew he was paranoid, it's not like his life would be ruined, but he had his reasons. His mind slowed when he reached his dorm. He hadn't met Dream before, so unless he was some super popular kid, none of his friends would find out. The deed was done, so now all he could do was wait.
The next day was their short presentation. Nothing went wrong, it felt normal, almost as if last night hadn't happened. Techno was shocked, but relieved that Dream looked at him the same as before, no judgment, no mockery. After class, Dream sparked a conversation. And he did the same the next class. Before he knew it, Techno was one of Dream's friends, a special friend in fact because he was the only one who knew about Dream's animal form.
The next time there was a thunder storm, Dream texted him and they met up, cat and dog cuddling just as they had before. Techno was very much a fan of their relationship.
