Marva Lynn has been under a lot of stress at home since the family takes her for granted, and she lashes out by blocking traffic at the St. Boniface Memorial Bridge, and causing all of Springfield to see when it is placed on the news. When the police officer calls Nolan in to talk to Marva Lynn, he manages to calm her down enough to tell her that he's sorry for taking advantage of her and that he loves her. She is moved by this and exits the car, but is later arrested by the police.

The car accident nearly killed Marva Lynn and Kyle. Kyle has severed bruises and Marva Lynn has both legs hurt.

Later on, Marva Lynn decides that she needs a vacation. Nolan tries to talk Marva Lynn out of it by reminding her of failed family vacations from the children's misbehavior and how they ended up staying home because of it. Nolan also mentions about not being pleasant company when he and Marva Lynn go on vacation together. Marva Lynn convinces Nolan that she needs to go to the spa resort alone for rest and relaxation for her legs. At first, Nolan was afraid that Marva Lynn meant that she wanted a divorce, but Marva Lynn said that she still loves Nolan and said it's normal for couples to take separate vacations and this relieves Nolan and he agrees for Marva Lynn to go on vacation.

Before leaving town, Marva Lynn puts Kevin, Lisa and Marla Lynn into the care of Grady and Nancy, but Delphine and Walburga did not go because of Marie's illness, but Kyle needs to stay alone.

While Marva Lynn is enjoying her vacation, the rest of the Smiths are suffering without her. Kevin, Lisa and Marla Lynn are having pain in the care of Grady and Nancy. Kevin has to sleep with Grady, as Lisa and Marla Lynn has to sleep with Nancy.

Nolan later invites Jim over to help him, but realizes how much he needs Marva Lynn to take care of things.

The next day, Nolan and Jim decided to watch basketball, Nolan looks at the watch, and he then makes his way over to Grady and Nancy, to pick up Kevin, Lisa and Marla Lynn.

On the train, Marva Lynn glances at a photo of her family, comparing it to the lesser-good looking family that greets her. In the evening, Marva Lynn says she appreciates Nolan helping her around the house, to which Nolan gladly agrees. Marva Lynn then continues asking her requests for help, upon which Kevin convinces her that they will do all the chores to help her out. The family then calls it quits, and goes to bed.

The next day, Nolan felt drunk near Paul, Grady, Ed, Fran, Bill, Mick, Roy, Fred and Karl, and hugs for life.
