Having being forced to clean his room after accidentally causing Nolan to trip and fall down the stairs, tearing a ligament in his back, Marva Lynn and Lisa arrive home to find Nolan hurt. Marva Lynn tells Kevin to clean his room. While doing so, he discovers an old cherry bomb, and chooses to flush it down the boys' toilets at school in an attempt to pull a prank. This solution is unknowingly made at the same time as the principal's mother visits the school. Kevin shows Dennis, Steve and Dennis the cherry bomb, and plans to flush it. When Kevin detonates the Cherry Bomb in the boys' restroom and cause to explode.

Shortly afterwards, the principal arrives at the Smith's house with Kevin in tow. He explains that the incident has 'transcended incorrigible.' Feeling that detention, suspension or expulsion won't do, he suggests deportation. The idea shocks Marva Lynn, but the principal explains his plan: In order to be rid of him, he proposes to the Smiths that Kevin should participate in a foreign exchange program. Kevin is sent to France, whereas the Smiths host a student from Albania named Adil Hoxha.

In France, Kevin is greeted by two winemakers, who work him harder than their donkey, Maurice. After going through Kevin's possessions, Kevin is made to collect and crush grapes, sleep on the floor, and sample wine adulterated with anti-freeze.

Back in Springfield, Adil is enjoying the comfortable residence of the Smiths which is in stark contrast to the sub-human conditions Kevin is living in. Adil is very appreciative and helps out the Smiths with their chores, pleasing Nolan, who is relieved to be rid of Kevin and his lousy attitude. However, it is revealed Adil is actually a spy who is after nuclear secrets, which he intends to obtain from Nolan. Nolan is happy that Adil is taking an interest in his work, and promptly shows him around the plant.

In high school, Nolan asked Adil to play hard with Paul, Grady, Ed and Fran, and they were exciting to see the Albanian boy name Adil.

Back in France, Kevin is sent out for a case of anti-freeze. As he wanders the streets, he finds a police officer, who doesn't speak English and only gives Kevin a piece of candy. Kevin leaves, feeling that he will never learn French, even though he has been there for two months. He then suddenly starts speaking French, and tells the officer about the child abuse and the plot to put anti-freeze in the wine. The winemakers are swiftly arrested for spiking the wine with anti-freeze and treating Kevin like a slave, and Kevin becomes a national hero in France.

Back in the United States, Adil is caught by the FBI and is exchanged for a boy who is an American spy caught in Albania. As Adil leaves, Kevin returns, and his family is grateful to see him again. Kevin has purchased gifts for the family, which Lisa dubs: "his first unselfish act."
