Marva Lynn wins a pair of ballet tickets after donating 30 dollars to a telethon that is trying to raise money for public television. Nolan promises to go with her, thinking a ballet is a bear driving in a small car. When Nolan learns what a ballet really is, he regrets his decision but can't back out of it. The man kidnaps Nolan, and he calls Marva Lynn to tell her what happened but she doesn't believe him. Marva Lynn's brother Waldemar drops by to return a power tool, and Marva Lynn chooses to take him to the ballet. Waldemar's son Harold is already graduating from high school and went to St. Boniface University.

Nolan's twelve cousins Paul, Grady, Ed, Fran, Bill, Mick, Roy, Fred, Karl, Milt, Gary and Dave saw him using a mouth with a bandana, Mick escorts the man to get out, and Karl and Milt grabs the man, and the man was arrested. Marva Lynn and Waldemar go to a coffee shop instead of going home, and they talk about their relationships. When Marva Lynn comes home, she informs Nolan that she is going out again next night to the disapproval of Nolan. Nolan is ridiculed by the children, and plans to have a night out of his own. He can't find anyone, though, and goes out on his own. Milt went on to babysit Kevin, Lisa, Marla Lynn, Kyle and Laurie. Nolan is not able to have much fun, while Marva Lynn has the night of her life. She and Waldemar go line dancing at a country bar called Shotkickers, shoot up a farmer's collection of antique cans, and go up to the Springfield sign, which causes Marva Lynn to remember when she and Nolan went out. They leave and Nolan arrives, only furthering depressing himself. He meets with the police officer, who offers him a ride home.

They run into Waldemar and Marva Lynn, and attempted to pull them over because they had a busted tail light. Waldemar is hesitant to pull over, and reveals that the car he is driving actually belongs to his ex-wife, Waldemar had explained to Marva Lynn earlier that his ex-wife has been stiffing her on child support for the last few years, and as a way to get back at him, Waldemar stole her car (Marva Lynn points out that Waldemar could have just reported him to the police or even child services). Nolan thinks Marva Lynn has become a criminal because of him not going to the ballet. Waldemar turns off the lights of the car.

Waldemar drops Marva Lynn off at a cafe, but she chooses to stick with friend in her run from the law. The officer and Nolan catch up with them again. Nolan takes a megaphone and apologizes to Marva Lynn and warns her, which makes them stop.

In a summary at the end, it is revealed that Waldemar has the charges dismissed against him (and that his ex-wife was forced by the judge to "pay all back child support"), Marva Lynn had to pay several cents for a few antique cans she destroyed (approximately 50 cents, plus an additional $2000 for punitive damages and mental anguish), and Nolan was sent to a military camp for more experimental testing.
