I run to the bathroom and stand outside the door. "Yeah? What's up Zozo?" I say as calmly as possible. "Mom come here." Zola says panicy I open the door and walk in. "What's up?" I say "mom look." I just kind of stand there. Zola started her period on the day we leave for the beach. "Shit" I think to myself. "Do you know what is happening Zola?" I say smiling she could tell it wasn't a real smile but I didn't want to worry her. "No.." she replies. "Okay. Well, you started your period. That means now you can have babies. So you have to wear a pad. Stay here I need to talk to cormac." I say to Zola she looks scared "Zola this is a good thing! You are okay." I say and walk out. "Cormac!" I yell. He didn't respond. "Cormac Hayes." I yell again he comes running down the hallway. "What?" He says concerned. "Zola started her period, Cory she's 10. I only have tampons. I need you to go to the store and buy pads. Please?" I say he looks at and we both smile. "Yeah sure, I'll be right back." He responds. "Thank you." I say then walk back to the bathroom "okay I'm getting you pads. Why don't you take a shower and then we need to talk." I tell Zola. She agrees so I walk out. Cormac was already gone Ellis was dressed and sleeping again, Bailey was still half asleep but Liam was getting him dressed and Austin wasn't anywhere to be found. "Thank you Liam." I say as I walk by his room. "Welcome." He says. I walk down stairs where I find Austin sitting at the kitchen table. "Hey bud." I say as I make a new cup of coffee. "Hi." He replies. "Is everything okay? Dad left quick and said he doesn't know what he's buying." Austin questions. I laugh because that was probably true. "Yes I sent him to get something for Zola because I don't have what she needs." I reply. Austin looks up at me. "Ohh." He says. I think he knows what I'm saying but I'm not fully saying it because I don't think Zola would like him knowing. "So do you like... have to do the whole.." I laugh again "the talk? Yeah, I do." I interrupt. "Yeah, good luck." He replies. "It's not that bad I never understood why people say it's so bad. I'm not getting into detail because we have to leave so I'm only telling her what she need to know." I reply. "I kind of feel bad for her, that pain on a flight. No thanks." We both laugh a little and then I realize...
I walk into the store but I'm not quite sure what I should buy. Like I said I never did this girly stuff. I walk over to the pads, tampons and all the period stuff. I start to look around and notice the pads have numbers on them.. 4, 3, 2, what the hell? I put my hand on the back of my neck. There was another women standing next to me. I get a pack of each, because I have no clue what to get. Then I walk up to pay. The cashier is a girl maybe seventeen years old and she just looks at me. I pay for them and before I leave she goes "tell your daughter I said good luck." I smile and said "I think I need more then her." Which made the young girl smile too. When I get home I walk in with two bags in my hands Austin and Meredith are sitting in the living room talking and then it goes silent. "Babe" Meredith says Austin starts laughing. "How much blood do you think comes out of us?" Meredith questions. "Well a lot but that's not why I have two bags, I have two bags because apparently there's sizes.." Austin is laughing harder now and so is Meredith "and it's not like I know what size to get so I got one of each?" I say questioning myself. "Austin why are you laughing?" I say confused "dad because I'm not a girl and I haven't ever done this but even I know not to get that many." Austin replies getting up to walk up the stairs but when he passes me he pats me on the back. Meredith gets up holding her coffee in her hand and walks over to me still standing in the doorway. "Thank you, I love you." She says giving me a quick kiss and walks upstairs. "You're welcome I love you too." I walk upstairs too. I get Meredith's, Liam's, And Austin's suitcases, carry them down stairs and place them in my car. It was 5:02 we needed to leave soon.
I walk back to the bathroom door and knock on it "Zo?" I ask in a soft voice. "Come in." She replies. "Hey, hun. I got you some pads. I'm going to show you how to put it on and we are going to talk some. Then we have to go. We will bring a pack of pads for vacation okay?" I say trying to give an outline of the rest of our morning. She looks at me worried "mom is this normal?" She asks. I almost laugh Zola is smart but this kind of stuff isn't talked about around her much. "Yes it's very normal every girl gets it." I say. I demonstrate how to put a pad on. "Got it?" I ask Zola nods. "Ok but one on I'm going to go check on the boys." I say and leave. I wasn't checking in the boys there dad was there it was fine. "Mom, what now?" Zola asks. "Did you put it on?" I question. "Yeah I have it in and new pants. "Okay get dressed if you have to, make up, hair, then come find me." I say. "Okay." Two minutes later Zola walks out with a tee-shirt on and sweatpants. Her hair was in a messy bun. "Okay we are going to talk about what's happening. Zola this conversation might get a little uncomfortable but we need to have it. I'm only telling you the parts you need to know right now because we have to leave." I say she nods.

"Zo there is a organ in a girls body called the uterus. When you have a baby in your belly that's where the baby stays. A part in the woman's uterus makes a little thing called an egg. The egg travels through these tubs and sits in the uterus, if the egg doesn't get fertilized meaning if a thing a man makes call sperm doesn't eat it it leaves. Your uterus is lined with tissue and blood to keep the baby safe. When the sperm eats the egg it makes a baby. when the egg leaves all the blood has to leave too. The blood leavening is called a period. Does that make sense?" I look at Zola who is just looking at me. "Yeah I think." She says. "Okay so women have to wear pads to keep the blood from getting on there clothes. Change the pad every time you pee or feel like you have to. You will know when you have too. You will get a big pain in you stomach, it's called a cramp. Your period will happen every month. If you have any questions just ask me. You can talk to me, Maggie, Amelia, doctor Bailey, about these things okay? Don't tell you brothers or sisters. This is a private thing." Zola shakes her head. "So don't tell anyone ask you if I have questions and this will continue to happen?" Zola asks recapping what I said. "Yes" I reply "k. Are we leaving soon?" She asks. "Yeah let's go check on the boys and dad, I told dad because he had to go get the pads." I say standing up and walking out of the door. "So can I talk to dad about this too?" She asks. I laugh "I mean yes if he's okay with that but I don't know how much he knows about it." Zola laughs too "okay."
