A/N: Okay so I know I already made a huge playlist for these two a while ago, but I found a ton more (sad) songs that suit them and so I gotta share them. Just humor me, I'm obsessed. Reasoning for each song is under the title - as always, please feel free to talk to me, make comments, and ask questions. I really do enjoy hearing from my fellow fans.
Just Give Me A Reason - P!nk
Okay alright to start off, we have this song about a love that might be falling apart, no matter how much the couple doesn't want it to, which reminds me of Kate when she believes she is speaking to the ghost of Rafe in the black reckoning. However, the song does have hopeful notes as well as sad ones, so I think it captures both the good and bad of the relationship.
Carry On - Fun
I personally like this song because it's somewhat existential and I've always liked existential things and that has only increased after I read the Death of Discworld books, but that's a whole other topic. Anyways, the reason I feel this song fits Rafe and Kate is that it's about people who have been through the hardships of life learning to move forward and embrace themselves and their strength.
Evermore - Taylor Swift
This song is really sad and poetic and it fits Kate after Rafe's death as she experiences so much pain but also starts to heal with her family. It's honestly a really pretty song, too.
My Immortal - Evanescence
Evanescence is absolutely great when it comes to dark and existential romance songs, so naturally, I love them. This one includes a lot of dark romance and death and love that you can't let go of, and also the line 'There's just too much that time cannot erase,' which I think fits the time travel themes of Kate and Rafe's story.
Let Her Go - Passenger
This song is really sad and I think it fits Rafe and his regrets about all the hurt he caused Kate as the Dire Magnus and the fact that he had to leave her behind and grieving when he died to heal the world at the end of the books.
Fix You - Coldplay
Kate and Rafe had both led very traumatic lives and this song looks into how that affects them and how they try to help each other heal regardless. Part of it is sweet but part of it is sad.
Too Much Love Will Kill You - Queen
This is one of my favorite songs. I love it so much. And I also love that it fits my favorite couple, because Kate and Rafe will sacrifice for each other, no matter how hurt they end up because of it, and because those sacrifices often cause chaos in their relationship.
My Tears Ricochet - Taylor Swift
Okay this one is really bitter and angsty and I think it fits Kate and The Dire Magnus, when she's yelling at him, and also the regret for the hurt he has caused her. It's also very poetic and has interesting lyrics which I really like.
Like Real People Do - Hozier
Kate and Rafe's relationship, as beautiful as it is, was doomed from the start, and this song deals with that and with their desire to have a real and long life together that never is fulfilled.
Peace - Taylor Swift
I think this song is actually really great for Kate and Rafe and for many other fictional couples always caught in chaos. It describes the deep bond between two people, the things they would do for each other, but also the way their lives have always been a mess and it's unlikely that will ever change, even if they want it to.
You Are The Reason - Calum Scott
This song is really good for Rafe's perspective on his and Kate's relationship. Kate really is the reason for him doing some of the most impactful things, like becoming the Dire Magnus and dying to save the world. This song is also sad and regretful and includes lines like 'and if I could turn back the clock, I'd make sure that light defeated the dark' which is just really fitting.
What About Us - P!nk
This one is also about fracturing relationships and chaos and wondering what happened to a couple. It's a nice enough song, but not one of my favorites or one of the deepest connecting on this list in my opinion.
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
Here's a song for the end of the black reckoning, when Kate and Rafe are at the cabin and trying to steal as much time together as possible while 'forgetting the world.'
Where Does The Time Go - A Great Big World
Kate and Rafe's relationship began because of time travel and was ultimately ended far too soon, and I think this song sums that up, and is quite interesting.
Already Gone - Sleeping At Last
Ah, another song about their doomed romance. This is definitely Rafe telling Kate to move on and live before sacrificing himself, hands down.
Break My Heart Again - FINNEAS
I just love giving these two really sad love songs, don't I? Well, this song fits Kate's feelings about Rafe as the Dire Magnus breaking her heart, and Rafe's feelings about how he loves Kate and would let her break him if that's what it took to make her happy.
Dancing With Your Ghost - Sasha Sloan
This is absolutely Kate after the end of the series. Trying to move on, missing Rafe desperately, dealing with nightmares and ghosts. The allusions to dancing and songs also fit our beloved tragic couple so well.
All I Want - Kodaline
This song fits Rafe when Kate has to leave him to return to the future and Kate when Rafe dies. It's very melancholy and is about loss.
Little Talks - Of Monsters And Men
Here's an interesting one; this song is creepy on one hand, sad on another, and cute on yet another. It's about ghosts, ie, Kate hearing Rafe's ghost after he is gone, which is sad and creepy all at once, but the comforting words this ghost whispers are actually quite sweet. I like the juxtaposition between themes.
Open Your Eyes - Snow Patrol
I feel like this is a song for Kate and Rafe after the burning of the church, with Kate keeping Rafe from harming the crowd and asking him to come to the future with her. It's also slightly dark in tone, which nicely foreshadows the tragic events about to come.
New York City - The Chainsmokers
This song is about losing a lover, and it's also set in the city where Kate and Rafe have so much history; New York. So, naturally, it's on the list.
My Last Breath - Evanescence
Okay let's face it, Kate and Rafe get into death and near death experiences a lot, and this song is for all those moments, but especially when Kate is bleeding out in Rafe's arms and Rafe's death at the end of the series. They're holding on to each other and not wanting to let go and it's both painful and beautiful all at once.
Moral Of The Story - Ashe
This song is so weird and interesting and unique and I kinda love it so much. It's really about regretting someone and learning from that, and while I don't think it's exactly how Kate feels about Rafe, it definitely reminds me of how she feels towards him when he's the Dire Magnus. It's honestly just a really strange in a good way song and I'd definitely recommend it.
A/N: There you go! I hope you liked the songs, even though literally all of them were sad. What can I say? I'm an angst writing fangirl with a tragic otp.
