Songfic Definition: A oneshot, story, or fanfic based on/containing the lyrics of a song. It can also be a reflection on canon events through means of a song.

Content: a reflection on Rafe x Kate

Song: Demons by Imagine Dragons (it's a good song, my favorite, and I'd recommend listening to it)

When the days are cold.

Kate had met him in the dead of winter. He had placed a blanket over her feet, a coat over her shoulders, trying to warm her as best as he could, even against the snow falling across New York.

And the cards all fold.

It has been a disaster of a day. After the attack, after she lost the atlas, she was alone in another time, no way to get home. She was filled with worry for her siblings, and terrified for herself.

And the saints we see.

She knew she had no one to look out for her. And she was fearful that now that she was gone, no one was looking after her brother and sister. Dr. Pym and Gabriel would not fail, she told herself. But what if they did? And what if she couldn't make it home?

Are all made of gold.

These were the things Kate feared as she stood in that church full of thieves and magic, after almost being sold to the imps. She had nothing, no atlas, no family by her side, only the locker she hung on to through thick and thin.

When your dreams all fail.

Rafe watched her from the shadows and worried. All he wanted was for his dream to be wrong. For her to live, even if it took her far, far away from him. In fact, that would probably be for the best.

And the ones we hail.

Henrietta had promised to help the girl, but Rafe was terrified that she wouldn't be able to in time. The imps were after her. The longer she stayed in the city, the more danger she was in. And that was before factoring in the danger he posed to her.

Are the worst of all.

But Rafe was drawn to the girl, Kate. He found himself sitting by her side, telling her of his tragic past. Of the people he lost, of the magical children he cared for, of the humans who hated his kind.

And the blood's run stale.

He liked her, he liked her a lot, even though he knew her destiny was interconnected with his, and that would lead her to death and ruin. Even though he didn't want her blood on his hands.

Don't wanna hide the truth.

Kate longs to know why this boy, Rafe is connected to her destiny. She knows he is powerful, powerful and angry. But she wants to know more. She wants the truth.

I wanna shelter you.

Rafe just wants to protect her, so when she saves the children he cares for and gets herself captured in the process, he's going after her, no matter the danger.

But with the beast inside.

When Kate does discover the truth, it's more horrible than she could have imagined. Rafe is to be the next Dire Magnus, her worst enemy, a monster.

There's nowhere we can hide.

Even once Rafe rescues Kate, they still cannot hide from fate, nor the dangers of being magic. Their dance, the one moment of peace they find, is cut short when humans burn Rafe's beloved home.

No matter what we breed.

Together, Rafe and Kate get every child out. But for Henrietta Burke, the woman who raised Rafe, it is too late. It's almost too late for Rafe as well, but Kate unlocks the power of the atlas inside of her, stops time, and saves his life.
