Outside the survey corps grounds, Iris stood patiently as she waited for Erwin Smith. It was already the next day, only a day left before the 23rd reconnaissance expedition. A carriage arrived, the noises of the horse's hoofs clicked as it slowly turns into a halt. A guard opens the door, revealing Erwin and Commander Keith Sadies. She stood straight and saluted the two, straight-faced. Acknowledging her presence, both men talk a bit further.
"Erwin, the preparations for tomorrow's expedition are almost done. How about the funding?" Iris asked as the two were walking towards the building. With a serious expression, Erwin looks straight ahead.
"Earlier, Commander told me that Lovof had a change of heart about funding our expedition. I'm guessing it was your scare that made him change his mind. A noble like him could not be arrested without any further proof and him knowing I have the documents with a list of his crimes might have threatened him as well," he stated.
Iris looked at him. "And the important document?"
"That... I will take care of it myself."
He looked at you and nodded. "You did well, Iris." The compliment made Iris feel a sense of pride in her work. She then thanked them as they proceeded to walk in silence.
While walking, both of them see Levi from a distance. They crossed paths and in Levi's eyes were fury. Knowing the intention behind his blue-eyed cold glare, Iris almost wanted to walk away. Who knows what he's thinking? The atmosphere was suffocating, even if they didn't utter a word. As he walked past them, Iris looks behind, her eyes empty yet exhaustion was written all over her face.
Later on, Iris decided to take a walk around the campus grounds in an attempt to take her mind off of things. A familiar red-haired girl walked toward her with a smile on her face. She waved, bright and full of energy.
"You look stressed, Sis." Iris raised her brows, forgetting that the 'sis' Isabel was referring to was her.
She let out an awkward laugh. "Well, I have to prepare my squad for tomorrow's expedition. And lately, I haven't been getting much sleep," admitted Iris, true to heart yet also wary of the girl's intentions.
Isabel nodded and crossed her arms, an understanding expression appeared on her face. "You have my respects, sis. All that weight on your shoulders doesn't even seem to bring you down."
Iris let out a grave sigh and smiled. "Yeah..." she lied.
"I'm kind of nervous for tomorrow. I mean... all my life I've lived in that underground city with no chance to see the vast skies. Thanks to my bro, I got to see at least a small percent of it. But if fighting titans meant a smalls chance at freedom, I'd gladly take it." Isabel commented, her eyes were down with sadness looming over them.
Iris stayed silent for a while, her black, wavy hair gently bounced up and down as she walked. She looked at the young girl. "It must've been hard. Living all your life without sunlight, legs weakened as you feel like trapped animals with no hope." The red-haired girl only looked at her, somehow she feels as if Iris's words were full of sorrow. Iris knew better than anyone, what it felt like to be an animal, a prey. And her understanding of Isabel's situation made her guilt grow heavier.
"Hey!! Iris my love!" The sound of Hange's deep voice echoed throughout the grounds and Iris couldn't help but chuckle. She knew she had to go and as a form of comfort, Iris placed her warm hand over the young girl's hair, gently caressing it.
