*Edited a few things, sorry guys*
The tall blond approached us, his brows were almost glued together as he looked at his injured comrades lying unconscious. "Commander, is this all we've got?" I asked him. He turned his head around and replied with a short yes.
"Some of our scouts are resting after our last mission. The Military Police is all we've got."
I jolted my eyes toward the MP's behind him. Frowning, I said, "Can we rely on them?" From the moment I had joined the scout regiment, I knew how most of these MP's were not only downright lazy, but entitled as well. If they think they can handle titans the way we do, then so be it but right now, they're willing to put their lives at stake for us—for Eren, and I don't want to downplay that.
Erwin nodded. "Spare your worries. These brave soldiers are willing to put their lives on the line for this mission. Anyways, is the situation the same?"
I turned around to look at my comrades and a frown appeared on my face. "Yes. But it's been five hours. They've probably gotten far. Assuming that their destination is outside wall Maria, it won't take too long for them to reach it." My words left a bitter taste in my mouth. Was it bad to look at things in a realistic perspective? Even if we managed to catch up with them, an armoured and a colossal titan are forces to be reckoned with.
"That doesn't matter now. We have to take a huge gamble." Erwin raised his left arm, shooting a determined stare at his soldiers. "Deploy the lifts!" he commanded with full authority.
I gasped when I felt a tight grip on my ankle, my mouth slightly agape at the surprising touch. When I'd turned around, it was none other than Hanji. "Hey! You alright?!" She forced a grin on her face and sighed.
"I-I need a map..."
Hanji gathered us with a small map in front of her. She was on her stomach, trying so hard to ignore the pain that's been throbbing on and off on her face. Her words made sense—it always makes sense whenever she was serious. But like Erwin said, this was another huge gamble. Assuming that Reiner didn't have enough energy to escape our walls, they would probably take a stop at the forest just a few kilometres ahead of us.
Like Hanji said, even if they had the strength to transform, the other titans would likely be a threat. I looked at Hanji with respect and admiration. Never have I seen her this determined in all the ten years we've known each other. After she had told us her theory, I kneeled to lower myself.
"Thanks, Hanji. Right now, you just need to rest." I placed my palm on her head and tried my best to smile.
Her head slowly nodded after receiving my gratitude. Lifting her hand, she used her fingers to wipe the salty tears off her eyes. "Shit. Sorry I can't be of use. I never thought the colossal would use that as a last defence."
I shook my head and sighed gravely. "Nobody saw it coming. Nobody saw this whole thing coming."
That was the hard truth. Taking in everything was like swallowing a dry rock. None of this bullshit would have happened if only I had killed them.
Kill them.
"Commander, I've got something to tell you," I said to Erwin after I got his attention. Nervous, I was absently playing with my thumb. "What if... we could do something about the armoured titan?"
His blue eyes looked up from the map, paying more attention to me. His face was practically telling me to continue. "Assuming that there is something else that lures other Titans toward a shifter, we could use that to our advantage to narrow their chances of escaping."
