The night of the induction ceremony finally began two days later. More than a hundred recruits had gathered in front of the stage as the night crept in, stars littering the vast skies. Below the stage were a lot of nervous cadets. Hanji, Iris and the squad gathered to the right of the stage, hidden in plain sight. Erwin Smith introduced himself first.
Erwin did not hesitate to speak the truth as each minute passed. "Humanity has gained an unprecedented advancement toward victory. I'm referring to Eren Jaeger. He has proven, by risking his life and limb, that he is unquestionably on our side. What's more, he has helped us not only foil the titans' invasion but given us a way to learn the truth behind titans as well." The commander examined the faces of the many cadets while his eyes scanned the crowd.
Iris listened to the melodies of their gasps. "We have reason to believe that the basement of his home in Shiganshina houses a secret of the titans that not even he is aware of. If we can just reach his basement, we may be able to obtain information that will help us break free from the titans' century-long tyranny."
Hanji and Iris looked at each other. They knew that everyone must have been wondering about all of this. Why Erwin chose to spread such important information was a secret only a few knew. Upon paying close attention, Armin thought hard about things.
Why would he go public with this information? However badly he wanted recruits, it was too much... His eyes travelled toward Iris, who was seen unaffected by the information. Did big sis know about this too? Is this some sort of plan?
Erwin continued his speech, telling the cadets about his plan on a surface level. This plan was already drilled into the heads of his trusted scouts. However, somewhere in that scheme hid something sinister. Iris remembered what occurred yesterday: the day that Erwin told some of his trusted members his real intentions.
~ One day ago ~
Erwin's eyes turned toward the elites in front of him. He had called them in his office since he was sure most of them already sensed that he was hiding the deeper layer of his plan. In front of him stood Levi, Hanji, Iris, Miche and a few others.
They all sat down on the empty seats, waiting for their commander to enlighten them with the truth. However, as soon as he began talking, their faces turned pale.
"Five years ago, a traumatic event startled this island. The colossal titan and the armoured titan breached our walls and disappeared. However, titans were never smart enough to get over Wall Maria. And now, just a few days ago, the colossal titan appeared out of nowhere and vanished again. When I heard about what happened to Eren Jaeger, that's when I knew there was something different about those two titans..." Hanji's eyes widened.
"Eren Jaeger has the ability to transform and disappear willingly. Let's call him a shifter. Out of a hundred theories, there is only one that is plausible. The colossal and the armoured titan could be controlled by humans, then they must be a titan shifter as well." Everyone in the room gasped.
Erwin's lips turned into a frown as he explained further. "-but, think about it. No one saw the colossal runaway, it simply vanished into thin air. The possibility that they are one of the people within the walls is high. Knowing that in mind, I suspect that there are spies who had slipped into our ranks. Remember what happened to Sawney and Bean? Two soldiers who are clearly against us knowing more about titans had killed them. And now that they're aware that Eren can turn into one, they probably shifted their motives and are after Eren..."
