"We can't just attack the Beast Titan," I told Levi right after we landed on a sturdy roof. While his hands removed the hoody covering his face, my eyes were on him the whole time.
Levi unsheathed his swords. "Yeah. We clear up the Titans here first. Then we move onto the Beast Titan."
"I'm afraid it's just going to keep sending the smaller ones. Soon, we'll all be exhausted."
Levi unsheathed his swords, narrowing his eyes upon further inspection. "You're right. Until we can devise a better plan, our only mission is to clear the smaller ones. You know what to do."
I nodded and unsheathed my own set of blades. "Right." Our eyes locked together before parting our own ways. This was the easier part of the mission and as much as I hated to say it, I dreaded the thought of dealing with that beast.
Twenty minutes. Levi and I spent twenty minutes clearing what seemed like an endless stream of normal Titans. It's been a while since we had to do any of this. But now it's all coming back. I had forgotten what it was like to be useful.
I scanned the area for any sight of more Titans and luckily, there seemed to be zero left. My feet landed on the same ceramic roof right next to Levi. He was breathing quickly, probably from doing his fair share of clearing the Titans.
"You okay?" I asked him, placing my hand on his shoulder.
Levi cleared his throat and stood straight after releasing his exhaustion. "Yeah. But we have way too many soldiers dying on us. It'll only be us two to defeat the Beast Titan soon."
I turned my eyes toward the enemy. They seemed way too relaxed for a bunch of intruders. Every time, they always see through our plans. And now that we have less soldiers than we came with, we were all at a risk of defeat.
"It's all crazy," I said and he turned to me, eyes focused. "But I'm partnered with an Ackerman. I'm sure I'll be fine." The ends of his lips curved into a small smile.
"You know your place," he teased.
"I was joking, jackass." I silently chuckled and rolled my eyes. Just as the moment got lighter, the sound of a thunderous roar came crashing in our ears. My eyes widened—it could only mean one thing. Bertholdt was coming.
Then, almost immediately, a small barrel flew in the air toward Shiganshina. That roar was his signal. I prepared myself for his transformation but nothing came about. Even Levi was just as confused as I was.
"What the hell is Bertholdt planning to do?" I clenched my jaw and waited for something to happen. When we all thought it was just a scare, bright flashing light came crashing down our eyes. Next, a horrifying sound of a deafening explosion came through. The ground shook and wobbled, causing the houses around us one earthquake away from destruction.
Shit. My jaw locked tight as my mind raced through terrifying thoughts. It was bad enough that we weren't there to help my friends. But what was worse—was that Hange was in there as well. My lips quivered with fear right as I attempted to leave our spot. A tight grasp around my wrist caused me to look back at Levi.
"Where the hell are you planning to do?"
"I have to know if they're alright," I said in a harsh whisper.
