46 - A few days later-
"The coup d'état was successful," Levi mumbled as he read the lines of the newspaper. I let out a huge sigh of relief. It's been a few days—a few days since they took Eren, a few days since I killed people. We were like vigilantes on the loose, hiding from everyone who might persecute us all. I've got to say, seeing my name and my face on the local newspaper was not funny. The words 'murderer' were plastered all over the damn place, describing us. But it wasn't like it was far from the truth. In fact, it was the truth. And the truth was, we were murderers. After an hour of talking with the kids, we've already come to face that truth.
The 104th, Levi and I had gathered around a lush forest. With the campfire set up to provide us warmth, we waited and waited for news. Finally, that news arrived. The ever so powerful king turned out to be a fake. Erwin was successful with his plan, although I never knew what he really wanted to do before this. With that stupidly brilliant mind of his, I could never know what's in it. Reading his mind was like staring at an overly complicated puzzle. Good grief.
After learning that we were finally free, Sasha cheered, hugged me from the side and let out a loud guffaw. Even Connie let out a huge sigh of relief. With the government off our asses, the regiment can finally do what it needed to do: save Eren.
"We can't waste any time now. With their leader, Eren and Historia around here somewhere. Who knows what they'll do?" said Levi, a sad look was plastered on his face. Hange raised her hand, showing us a medium-sized book covered with leather.
"I may have a few answers. Let's get there and put an end to this, shall we?" Her smile wasn't as radiant as before but needless to say, I appreciated my best friend for everything she's done for us. With three people off of her squad, it wouldn't be a surprise if she was upset. But she had never showed her frustration.
We rode on a wagon in the middle of the night. Now that we were free, nobody could bother us anymore—that in itself was a huge relief. I sat beside Mikasa and was opposite from Levi. With Armin in control of the horse, we calmly talked about what the book in her hand was all about. It was like unveiling a huge secret—one that might change how I look at things.
When she began talking, I paid more attention than I ever did with anything before. Five or so years ago, a disaster struck on the Reiss family. With five children and a wife, Lord Reiss was the head and the leader of the household. On the day of the Wall Maria breach, they were praying in a church and unfortunately, some bandits took it upon themselves to destroy what he had.
What was weird, however, was how these bandits destroyed a stone chapel. We might be jumping to conclusions, but something's definitely suspicious about this whole ordeal.
"Got it? He's Kenny the reaper. If he's there, he'll be our biggest obstacle," Levi said. We've spoken for almost an hour and the tale of an urban legend killer caught my attention. Kenny the ripper? It sounded awfully like a tale. A shame that it was true, though. He's deadlier than me, Levi said. How much of a threat is that guy anyway?
"Still, how is it that you lived with him but know almost nothing about him, Levi?" Hange questioned and I secretly chuckled. It certainly reminded me of something—rather, it reminded me of someone. And that someone was me. I know almost nothing about Levi's past, although it doesn't bother me as much anymore.
"Sorry, but it's not like I had options. I only knew his full name a day ago."
"And? What is it?" I turned to him, curious.
