There, I saw Historia at the large grassy field, watching six or more children play together. The young blonde caught my eye and grinned.
"Major, you're finally here!" greeted Historia. The kids who were busy playing grew curious and followed the Queen as she approached me.
"Sorry I'm a bit late."
"Oh, it's all right. As long as I have extra hands to watch these rowdy kids, you can do what you want." I showed her a warm smile and bent over to greet the little children. One adorable girl hid behind Historia, shy and intimidated. Sooner or later, they began to warm up. Some of them even suggested we play tag while the others wanted to play hide and seek.
It was a good way to pass time. Thirty minutes had gone by and the children grew tired. Well, in all honesty, so did I. Many times have I forgotten that I was half-way through my twenties—not exactly a pleasant feeling to a young woman like me. When one girl, about five years of age, ran past me while giggling, I turned around. I watched as the little child got picked up by two familiar hands by a man I wasn't expecting to see.
"Levi?" He turned his eyes from the little girl to me, all while a kind smile was painted on his face.
"Oh, did I forget to tell you that he's a regular here?" said Historia from the back. I looked at him, surprised. The little girl's giggles filled the air pleasantly.
"I thought you hated children," I asked, arms crossed with a sly smile on my face. The man turned, enough to make the girl's face visible.
"I know. But you love them, don't you? Besides, I've got nothing to do so I came here." I couldn't help but form a grin. He pushed his arms out, bringing the child with him and into my shoulders. My heart just about melted when I felt her little face snuggled into my embrace.
I stroked her hair gently. "See, she loves me more."
Levi shook his head and chuckled. "You're like a magnet for little kids, huh?"
"It's because I don't look at people as if I want to kill them," I teased. Levi rolled his eyes after entering through the small gate. I started to notice his jet-black hair.
"Your hair is getting longer," I told him.
Levi lowered his gaze, suddenly looking sullen. "Yeah... Don't exactly have the time to cut them."
After letting the child down, I looked deep in his eyes. "Want me to cut it for you?" I suggested without much thought. I used to cut my own hair during training corps. It'd be fun to see his reaction if I'd somehow mess it up. Knowing him, he'd probably curse me out and tell me how horrible I am at cutting hair.
Historia came closer, thanking the Captain for making another visit. The simple fact that he regularly took time out of his day to visit the orphanage made me feel warm and giddy. It was like falling in love again. I had never really experienced this type of feeling; the feeling of seeing Levi as if the world was moving slowly. He was always there through thick and thin, always tried to put me first before him, and when I needed him, he was there. Levi, in my eyes, had always been my saviour. But as I watch him entertain the little children, I had just now realized this overwhelming feeling.
I loved him. So much so that I began to imagine us growing old together. It sounded so cliché, so corny yet at the same time, it felt beautiful. Why did I just now experience this? After seven years of being together, why am I only feeling this now?
