Day of the expedition
"What... what do we do now?" I asked Erwin and Levi in the midst of a rock throwing game a certain Titan had entertained itself with. This wasn't a part of our plan. Heck, this was never what we had expected to happen. Right now as we spoke—without worrying that we could be painfully crushed by boulders—a couple of our soldiers had died already. Yet here we were, having a conversation without any panic present. At least, that's what I tried to portray. Deep inside, I was scared.
The plan was simple: seal the inner and outer gates of Wall Maria, Isolate Shiganshina, and exterminate the Titans in the district. As for Eren, Erwin and Armin had talked about something before. If anything, we all had it under control.
Until...
One hour ago:
After a few hours of gruelling travel toward Wall Maria and more specifically, Shiganshina, the regiment had finally arrived. We maneuvered ourselves on top of the walls with our hoodies on. The moment I looked away from my gear and onto the sight before us, my breath hitched.
There it was. Shiganshina. This must be the view that Bertholdt saw: a small district bustling with innocent people. He knew fully well what he was going to do, didn't he? Before I knew it, my legs started shaking. I wanted to puke. This was where I had almost died. Where mother had died. Where many people's innocent lives were taken.
I knew from my peripheral vision that Eren was feeling the same. Luckily Levi was there to knock us back into the present. I was about to follow his orders when I felt Armin's arm around my wrist, stopping me for something. He then pointed at a charcoal stain near the edge of the wall. It was a sign of fire. And right then and there, I realized we weren't alone.
I flew to Hange's team to report what we had found. "Something strange is going on Iris. There's not a single Titan in sight," she said worryingly. Okay, scratch part three of the plan. Now that there were no Titans to eradicate—it just made sealing the walls a lot easier!
Levi let out an annoyed grunt as soon as he landed behind us. "No titans. Now we just have to seal the walls. What the fuck is going on?"
"No clue. B-but Reiner and Bertholdt are close," I told him, pointing at the town below.
Levi clicked his tongue. "We have to keep going. Every second is important." After his persistent reply, I sighed and let out a green signal with my flare gun. Soon enough, the rest of the squads in their respective areas followed.
My eyes followed the bright thundering light from Eren. With his transformation done, he now had to seal the outer wall. Thankfully there wasn't much difficulty. With his newly unleashed ability to harden with a durable crystal material, I reckon it'd be much harder to defeat him.
"Thank God. Your experiments have done wonders, Hange." I placed a hand on my chest, feeling the pounding heartbeat inside me.
"Yeah. Eren's come a long way," she replied seriously. With Hange's normal personality out the window, this operation was now as serious as ever.
We were on the look out for a few minutes until we finally had to move toward the inner gate. When Eren and I shared a quick eye contact, the only reassurance I could give him was a smile and a nod. I knew Mikasa would take care of the rest for me. I knew she would.
