"Yahoo!" Hanji shouted in joy as she hacked away a part of a titan's nape. The expedition had just begun beyond Wall Rose. Iris maneuvered toward a 6-meter titan and sliced its eyes open before completely killing it.
"50th!" boasted Iris after landing on the rooftop where Hanji stood. Jealous, Hanji refused to accept her count and insisted it was a made-up number.
Levi arrived at the same spot and flicked the disgusting blood off his blade. "That's depressing." The man looked at both women.
"Your numbers, that is," he teased Iris and Hanji. The brown-haired woman dramatically clenched her cloak and looked away.
"Iris... Your boyfriend had turned into an asshole. Let's feed him to a titan." The woman in question rolled her eyes.
"Enough. Levi, you go south while Hanji and I go east." The ends of his lips curved into a condescending smirk.
"Don't go ordering around the captain." And with that, he left. A small sigh escaped her lips. If anyone was a killjoy among the three, it's Iris. She could never understand how the almost psycho-of-a-friend finds enjoyment in killing the enemies. She never understood. And quite frankly, Iris didn't think she would ever understand.
They were at it for half an hour before Erwin called them to retreat.
"Commander, what's the deal?" Iris landed on her two feet in front of the blond man. His face was as serious as ever, showing no signs of emotional distress. He looked to the right.
"The titans are heading toward the city. I have a feeling something terrible is happening there." Iris furrowed her brows, suddenly panicking after remembering her brother was there.
"But it'll almost take us an hour to get back!" she voiced her concern. Indeed, it took them an hour to travel back to Trost District. Thankfully, only a few soldiers had died. Still, several hopes and dreams were lost. Both Levi and Iris had become sort of numb to it. Especially Iris. The thought of death rarely scared her anymore. Simply because she almost experienced death herself.
By the time they got back, chaos had already surrounded the city. She stood on top of the walls of Trost District, her eyes widened in shock. Not... again. The titans were at it again. When will they ever stop? The sound of a slinging ODM gear snapped her back to reality. Levi stood beside her, concern showing on his face.
"Hey, you alright?"
"My brother has to be here somewhere!" They both scanned the area, their cloaks billowing against the cold breeze. Her eyes grew wide upon seeing the three kids near the gate, they were stuck in place and none of them were moving at all. Narrowing her eyes, she wondered who those kids could be.
A gasp escaped her lips after inspecting them further: one was blond, the other two had black hair. She wasn't mistaken, it's them. Wait... they're on top of a titan?!
"EREN!" Iris tried to jump off the walls to save them but felt a hand on her shoulder. When she turned around, she saw the look on Levi's face. A look that clearly said don't-do-anything-stupid.
"I'll save them. Report back to Erwin!" She finally calmed down after a few seconds and nodded. Iris used her gear to return to the commander
Erwin ordered the arriving members of the survey corps finished the fight. It was an easy task, however, the continuous reminder that Eren turned into a titan out of all distracted Iris. The next day, a few soldiers and trainees were tasked to gather corpses of their fallen comrades. Although it was the first time that humanity had stopped a Titan invasion, there were far too many casualties and deaths to celebrate this momentous achievement.
