30
A few days later, Eren and Levi travelled far beyond Trost District to the Survey Corps' old HQ. The young man was now an official member of the scouts and Special Operations Squad, Levi's own squad full of elites that he and Erwin hand-picked.
Among the squad was Petra Ral, a twenty-three-year-old soldier with 10 solo kills and 40 assists. While they were riding on their horses, Olou Bozado tried his best to intimidate Eren-- but of course, hilariously failed after biting his tongue like an idiot. That's what he gets for trying to act like Captain Levi, thought Petra. Although haughty and obnoxious, Olou boasts 39 solo kills. He placed third on the record for kills, bested only by Iris and then Levi.
Eld Jinn was the quietest among them but was intellectual. The next was a man named Gunther Schultz, a new soldier chosen by Levi: he was the most reasonable out of all of them. As they travelled, Petra revealed to Eren that Iris stayed behind to talk with the commander.
"We're 30 days out from an expedition to set up a logistics base beyond the wall. And now you're saying we'll have a crop of fresh recruits along the ride?" questioned Miche as he stared outside the window.
Erwin replied while focusing on a map he'd hand-drawn, "Assuming any sign-up, yes." Iris crossed her legs and turned to him.
"That seems a bit rash, Erwin." Miche turned around and pointed at her with a smirk.
"I was gonna say that."
"I'm still mad that you sniffed me when I entered. You didn't have to do that." His lips curved and smiled apologetically.
The man ever so focused on his map acknowledged their opinions and then answered with his own, "Our custody of Eren is conditional on the results of this mission. Right now, we need to persuade the brass that Eren is an asset and that we have him under control. The last thing we need is for the military police to interrupt-"
"And you don't want to give me a straight answer, is that it?" intercepted Miche. Iris raised a brow at the sudden interruption and casually sipped her tea.
"To be honest, It does seem like you're hiding something from us," she added. The commander's lips turned into a smile, his brows curled at how perceptive the two Majors were.
"Iris, Miche. Your noses are as sharp as ever, huh? Not bad." She let out a loud chuckle while drinking from her cup. Iris didn't know whether Erwin was joking or not. Knowing him, it probably had no other meaning.
"Sorry..." She smiled and looked away.
"That wasn't a pun," Erwin told Iris-- although rather flatly-- which made her laugh even more. "But since you've caught me, I'll tell you..." The two of them immediately turned serious. It took half an hour for Iris and Miche to fully grasp everything that he had said.
Erwin wanted to capture an abnormal titan, a feat that they have never done before. After concluding that Eren was possibly not the only person who could willingly turn into a titan, he was suspicious that a spy had slipped within the ranks.
"I see..." Iris lowered her head and stared blankly at the glass of tea in front of her. Things have gotten weirder since Eren had turned into a titan. It was like a turning point that snowballed from there.
"Iris. I know it sounds foolish to ask this again but are you certain you haven't seen anything else beyond your home ten years ago?" Her eyes gravitated toward him, her face showing certainty.
