"Throne how long has it been?" He asks.
I shake my head, "I don't know when it is, we haven't landed anywhere yet. You only got off the ice a little while ago." I brush his hair back from his face, "let me take the mask off, they aren't going to notice and when we land we can put it back on."
He nods turning away and I undo the back taking it off. "Better?" I ask.
Again I get a nod, I settle next to him wrapping one of my wings behind him and leaning into his side. I close my eyes letting myself enjoy it. The sound of his breathing and heartbeat, his warmth. We steal these moments because we have nothing else.
"I still don't remember anything from before. Did you..." he trails off not wanting to ask.
"No," I furrow my brow. "I keep looking but I can't find anything about your past before just the same information. You were an American soldier, Zola experimented on you before we met, and you knew Captain America. It's not like that information is just sitting around and I'm kept under a strict watch in the facility."
He takes my hand in his own, the one that's not metal. He avoids touching me with his metal arm most of the time, afraid he will hurt me in some way. "It's okay. We will find out. One day we won't be doing this." He kisses the top of my head.
The rest of the ride is quiet. And when it's time to put his mask back on we both take our time. When it is back in place I lean my forehead against his own, gentle holding his face in my hands. "One day." I whisper. And he whispers it back to me before we go back to sitting across from one another waiting for the plane to land.
The day of staking out the Stark home is uneventful. Both of us were under watch so there is no time for conversation, no more stolen moments. The second night a car leaves the home and Soldier follows on a bike. I fly further behind silently watching. My wings don't make much noise, no more than a dove flying.
Soldier takes out the tires on the car causing it to crash into a tree on the side of the road. I land off to the side in the shadows. The man crawls out of the drivers seat before Soldier grabs him by the back of the head repeatedly punching the man after he begs him for something. Most likely his life but I can't hear from here. He drags the body and places it back in the car, before walking around the back of the car and strangling the woman beside him. Picking up the case of serum he shoots out a nearby camera before finding me in the woods.
"Let's go." He says curtly. Wrapping his arms around me and I fly off.
I get why he doesn't want to talk. Neither of us do after. We don't say anything after we kill people, it's not fun. It's not pleasurable. But it keeps us alive.
Before we board the extraction plane he grabs my arm. "It's 1991, there was a paper in the car." I give him a soft smile and nod. There's no time for a conversation now. There are too many eyes watching us.
Once the plane was off the ground and we were left alone again I returned next to his side. He leans his head down onto my own and I wrap my wings around us.
"I know." Is all I say. I don't need to say anything else. He won't want to talk about it and neither will I. "Do you want to feel comfort?" I ask softly.
"No." He responds.
I furrow my brow. And I pull away to look at him, "Why won't you let me just this once? I can help you know I can" I look down at my fingers watching the gold wisps float between my fingers.
"Hey." He gently grabs my chin having me look at him. "This is our weight. There is no amount of comfort to take that away." He kisses my forehead and settles me back into position and we stay like that until we have to separate again.
