"Remind me why we're here again?"
"We're taking a break," Namjoon squeezes his boyfriend's hand.
"I don't like the beach," grumbles the elder, pouting as he brings his knees to his chest. "There are always idiots letting their kids run everywhere like they own the place."
"Which is why we're here late. Sunset's beautiful from here."
"Yeah, whatever."
Silence. The pair of them simply stare out over the gentle waves, watching as they sway back and forth, the salty smell drifting gracefully through the air like a bird and filling their nostrils.
Nostalgia. That's the smell. Waking up on a warm day and having your parents tell you you're going to the beach. Packing buckets and spades to build sandcastles. Digging moats around your sandcastles with your feet, decorating them with seashells. Taking that first brave dip into the foaming water, then withdrawing yourself from it because it's too cold.
Recollecting those memories, Namjoon lets a wistful smile form on his face. He glances off to his side to see if his boyfriend's doing the same. The setting sun casts a soft glow on Yoongi's face, highlighting all his features perfectly - feline eyes, button nose, gorgeous pale complexion - and unfortunately, that includes the frown which his thin pink lips have been pushed into.
"Alright," he says, wrapping his arms around the elder's waist and letting his chin rest on the latter's shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing,"
"Hyung, you can't lie to me. We've been together for 11 years, I know when you're not okay."
Yoongi lets out a heavy sigh, leaning on his palm. "I just... You could do so much better than me, Joon. Why did you settle for someone who isn't good enough for you? Why not be with someone who deserves your love?"
"Gi," the taller male frowns softly, "you are good enough for me, and you do deserve my love. Why do you feel like you don't?"
"Because look at us. You're tall, handsome, smart, you've got a successful job doing something you love. I'm tiny, I'm a complete dumbass, and I'm stuck in an office with people I'd gladly dropkick if I had the chance. You should just find someone else, someone... someone like you."
"You are like me. We're both good-looking young men, we're intelligent, we both have a passion for music, the list goes on. So what makes you think I shouldn't be with you?"
Yoongi shrugs, cracking a tiny, awkward smile. "I constantly feel like I'm living a dream because I'm living with you. Me, Yoongi, this guy, the awkward pansexual that just stands in the corner until people leave."
"But you're also the guy who wouldn't back down when the landlord raised our rent without a reason. Even if we did get evicted because you called him a man-slut."
"Motherfucker had it coming. Lost the best two damn tenants he ever had that day."
"My point is," Namjoon rubs his back softly, "you're perfectly okay for me. If anything, you're out of my league. I mean, when I came out in high school, I never thought I'd find someone as awesome as you. You were just so direct - you knew what you wanted, and you wouldn't stop until you got it. But what really drew me to you in particular is that you know who you are, and you won't change it for anyone."
The smile grows wider. "Thanks, Joon. I really needed to hear that."
"I know," the brunet whispers, pressing a feather-light kiss to his boyfriend's shoulder, "and you're welcome. I know I don't say this a lot, because I know you don't like hearing it too much, but I love you."
"I love you too, Namjoonie."
"And to prove how much I love you," says the taller, clearing his throat as he removes a little box from his pocket and holds it, open and facing his boyfriend, in one hand, while the other reaches to grab one of Yoongi's hands, "Min Yoongi, will you marry me?"
"Yes," nods the elder, grinning. There's not a single drop of hesitation in his voice. "Yes, I'll marry you."
Dimples prominent on his face, Namjoon takes the ring from the box and places it carefully on his now-fiancé's finger, before pulling him closer. Their lips coalesce, Yoongi's arms wrapping around his neck as it happens, and they spend the next few moments doing nothing but gazing into one another's eyes.
"On second thought," Yoongi hesitates, but can't keep the smile off his face, "I think I do like the beach."
