Jungkook's not happy. He should be, considering it's September 1st - his birthday - and he's with the other members, but he's not. They're different today. They're being weirdly nice - even more so than usual - and giving him all kinds of gifts, to the point where he's suspecting they're focusing more on each other than on him.
His hyungs love him, but they're also really competitive. A tiny thing can set off all kinds of chaos, so today's just a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode.
"Hey, Koo, I got you this jacket." Jimin approaches him, holding a dry-cleaning bag. "It's one of the ones from the Louis Vuitton show we did, since I remember how much you liked it."
He hands it to the younger with a smile, watching the latter's shocked expression as he takes it, then carries it towards his room to hang it up. He follows him, passing by the other members in the process.
"Good luck topping that, bitches." he mutters snidely, giving a confident smirk.
"We will." Hoseok scoffs. "At least, I know I will."
"Hyungs, stop." Jungkook mumbles, catching on yet not wanting to confront them. They don't seem to hear him.
"At least I didn't have to break into our music video closet to get my gift." Taehyung folds his arms and glares.
"Guys, please-"
"Oh yeah? Well, joke's on you, it wasn't even difficult." Seokjin defends himself. "So, not only have I bought him the most stuff, I've also had the easiest time doing it and I've still got more to give. You can all-"
"Just stop it!"
The members all fall silent, staring at the red-faced maknae, who stands in the middle of the room with his fists balled up by his sides.
"Stop arguing! All I wanted for my birthday was a peaceful day with you guys! I don't want any of this stupid stuff!"
"Jungkook, wait-"
The front door slams shut, and the remaining six members share a look.
"All he wanted was us..." Taehyung mumbles, looking down for a moment. "And we got too distracted trying to give him the best gift."
"We ruined his special day." Jimin sighs, defeated, and glances over to where Yoongi's standing. He's got a determined look in his eyes. "What is it, hyung?"
Yoongi slams his fist down onto his other hand, suddenly smiling. "Jin-hyung, start cooking. Anything Jungkook likes, just make it. Joon and Tae, move all the gifts somewhere else and clean up. Hobi, go into my room and look in the bottom drawer of my nightstand and you should find candles. Take some into Jungkook's room and put them around, but don't light them yet. Jimin, get your shoes on and come with me."
"Where are we going?"
"We're gonna make this right."
That night...
Glancing at the clock on the wall, Hoseok lets out an anxious sigh. It's almost midnight, and there's still no sign of Jungkook. Sure, he knows the younger was angry and needed space, but he didn't expect him to be gone for 10 hours like he has been.
The sound of the front door unlocking catches his attention, though he hides his relief the best he can. Jungkook's eyes and nose are red, his cheeks are puffy and tear-stained, and though he might not realise it, he's pouting immensely.
Hoseok gives him a little smile as he puts his shoes and coat down, focusing mainly on his phone so the younger doesn't feel like he's micromanaging him. The purple-haired sniffles and approaches the couch, sitting down to begin with, before bringing his legs up beside him and lying down so his head rests in his boyfriend's lap.
"I'm sorry for making you guys worry about me," he mumbles, eyes meeting the elder's. "And I shouldn't have snapped at you all."
"Baby, don't." Hoseok leans down and pecks his forehead. "It's not your fault. We got carried away and forgot that today was about making you feel special, not about expensive presents. You were overwhelmed, and that's okay."
Jungkook sighs softly and shuts his eyes, turning onto his side. "Can I sleep on you, hyungie?"
"I think you'd be better off in your bed, hm?"
"But I'm comfy here..."
"I know, but..." the elder cracks a little smile, unsure. "I talked to the others, and we fixed some stuff for you. Come see."
He gets up and takes Jungkook's hand, leading him towards his bedroom. Once he's there, he knocks - not wanting to just open it in case the others are still setting up - and waits for it to open, then gestures for the younger to enter.
Jungkook's confused to say the least. Yet he still goes into the room, seeing his hyungs sat on and around his bed, candles adorning the top of the dresser and plates of food - deliciously fragrant grilled meat, salad and chopped fruit - sitting on the nightstand, along with a small, black, rectangular box.
"We returned what we could." Hoseok says with a small grin, taking a seat on the bed and handing over the little box. "And we used the money to buy you this. One present, from all of us."
Jungkook looks to his hyungs' expectant faces before opening the box. From inside, he gingerly removes a little silver necklace and holds it against himself. A little number 7 hangs from it, sitting in the middle of his collarbone, and he sniffles as he looks to the others once again.
"I love you guys so much." he whispers, voice breaking. "I'm really sorry I yelled at you all."
"It's our fault, Koo." Taehyung tells him. "We got too competitive and forgot what today was really about - celebrating you."
"If anyone's sorry, it's us." Seokjin agrees. "Now, we've got a stack of DVDs here, what should we watch first?"
