Chapter Nine: The Coredramon Of It All

Previously on Digimon Adventure: Secret Police...

MailBirdramon was heading straight for the group once again. Turuiemon and Gargomon could already see they would be too late to divert the attack.

"Run!" Renamon called in slight panic.

All kids and Digimon followed the direction blindly. Sam was stumbling slightly. Running for your life could get one stressed and clumsy.

Sam tripped over his own feet, nearly face planting the hard ground. Dracomon grabbed his hand, but Sam still fell forward.

"Sam!" Dracomon yelled.

MailBirdramon was about to strike.

"DRACOMON, DIGIVOLVE TO...COREDRAMON!"

Sam gasped from his spot on the rocky ground. He turned to his back to lean on his hands. Dracomon had let go of his hand, and it was still warm from his touch. "He...did it."

Anna watched from next to Renamon. She couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. Why did it seem like the rest of the world's partners had digivolved.

Coredramon was shoving MailBirdramon's beak away from the ground. Sam stared in awe and horror before jumping to his feet and running to Charlie's side. He was happy Dracomon had digivolved, but his heart was still racing from the near encounter with death. He wrapped his arms around Charlie's, who smiled gently in his grip.

Coredramon still gripped MailBirdramon's beak when he began to speak. "Run! I don't think I can hold him for much longer!"

Sam stayed where he was until Charlie tugged on his arm. "He's right. We have to get away while we can."

Sam still felt guilt as he ran alongside Charlie. He was supposed to be partners with Dracomon always, and now some bird with attitude was separating them. He rarely saw Falcomon with Ayame, and he didn't want a partnership like that.

Tay finally slid to a stop from the group after a few minutes of sprinting. She was panting from the run like her companions.

"Just hearing you guys breathing so heavily makes me so tired," Gatomon said from atop Tay's hair.

"And you didn't even run," Tay muttered.

"Focus! We have to get away from here! I'm not sure what MailBirdramon's deal is, but he's stronger than all of our partners," Fumiko pointed out.

"Why is that?" Tay wondered.

"When I did a Digivice scan on him, it said he was an ultimate. From what I understand, our partners are rookie and champion levels, so he's meant to be more powerful," Anna recalled.

"I suppose that makes sense," Charlie agreed.

"Your take on this, Sam?" Tay asked.

"Huh?" Sam was ripped from his thinking. While the others sounded like echoes in the back of his mind, he was focused on Coredramon. Shouldn't he be back by now?

Dracomon stumbled into the area, one hand on a tree trunk. Sam ran to his partner in concern.

"Are you okay?" Sam questioned in concern.

"Yeah, but MailBirdramon got away," Dracomon replied, sitting around. "He is no joker."

"What happened before he left?" Gargomon asked.

"MailBirdramon muttered something about inheriting love and then flew away. He beat his wings so powerfully that I hit a tree. The tree fell over, but I got the wind knocked out of me," Dracomon explained.

"I wonder why he flew off so suddenly," Turuiemon wondered quietly.

Ayame threw a rock at a tree. It bounced back to her waiting hand, as it was rather round. Raegan sat with Mikemon inher hands. He was still asleep, his breathing warming her.

"I worry about you Mikey," she whispered.

"I'm sure he would have told you never to call him that again if he were awake," Jimmee said, trying to cheer her up.

"That sentence depends on the word if," she replied almost emotionlessly.

"I'm busy thinking about what Ceya is up to," Maia cut in.

"That is a good pondering topic," Kyle told himself.

"Yeah. Thinking of reasons why she left us without a warning," Impmon responded boredly.

Ayame stood, her rock falling into Falcomon's wings. "I have had it with your attitude!"

"And you are going to do what about that, purple? I'm the one in this arguement with fire," Impmon pointed out, sparks flying on his fingers.

"You two need to learn the meaning of calm."

Impmon and Ayame turned to see Kyle. He had one arm outstreched over his kneecap, which was pointed up. His other leg was rather flat against the ground. Kyle closed his eyes. "I'm just saying,"

Ayame and Impmon turned away from each other, Ayame's more dramatic and irritated than Impmon's. Kyle sighed. Was there ever a moment of silence with this rowdy crew?

Ceya flew in Devimon's arms. MailBirdramon had taken to the skies a few mintues before, and the duo had been chasing him ever since.

Devimon nodded. Ceya climbed onto his back and held on as he tackled the bird.

MailBirdramon hit the ground with a thud. Devimon prepared an attack.

"To continue from our earlier conversation?" Ceya questioned.

"The Shadow Reigners have all commited their lives to chasing you and your friends. I have my target...and you can't do anything to save them," MailBirdramon replied.

"More information, please," Ceya growled.

"Oh, but that would break the suspense, wouldn't it?" MailBirdramon answered snarkily. He beat his wings to get Devimon off of him.

Devimon's wings kept him from falling. Ceya still held on. She scrambled into his arms.

MailBirdramon flew towards a small clearing, and ten figures were distinctly seen.

Devimon flew to the ground. He weaved in and out of trees to reach Raegan, Kyle, Maia and company first.

"You guys!" Ceya exclaimed as Devimon put her down.

"You're back!" Raegan grinned. She ran to her friend, Mikemon still in her arms.

"Yes, but there's a problem! MailBirdramon is-"

"GIVE IT!"

Ayame was pulling her crest from MailBirdramon's teeth. He let go, and she slammed into a tree. Groaning, she hit the ground. Falcomon stood in front of her dazed figure protectively.

"That's a cute show, but I'm on a tight schedule," MailBirdramon said.

Ceya felt a familiar feeling overwhelm her. A feeling of knowing.

"I think I just figured out which of us MailBirdramon wants," she whispered.

Ceya whirled to face MailBirdramon. "Ayame is your target, isn't she...Shadow Reigner?"

Here you are! I know this chapter wasn't the best, but I hoped you enjoyed it.

And yes, MailBirdramon is a Shadow Reigner. There are 10 more, one for each character. I will say now that one other person that the characters previously faced is a Shadow Reigner, but who?
