Chapter Thirty Five: Ocean of Nightmares

Anna flickered her eyes open. She held her head as she sat up. "Renamon?" Her voice echoed for miles, and no answer came. The fox was no where in sight.

"Not funny," she grunted, standing shakily. "Renamon, this isn't funny."

No response came this time either. "Renamon?" Anna couldn't keep the fear out of her voice. She bit her lip. Anna gasped when she realized where she was.

"Dracomon? Charlie? Ayame?" Sam yelled, cupping his hands around his mouth.

Sam glanced around. He had just woken up, though he wasn't sure what had convinced him to fall asleep in the middle of a fight anyways...

Sam continued to look around, worry weaving its way into his eyes. He sighed and closed his eyes.

"Wait...." he whispered. He had been so focused on finding his companions he had forgotten that he wasn't in the Digital World.

He and Anna were now in the Dark Ocean, and it wasn't an illusion, so he didn't know how to get out.

Anna sat down on a rock. She pulled out her crest from under her shirt. Anna worked it off of her head so she could stare at it more easily.

One question crossed her mind: how did the crest work?

She hadn't been able to see when an illusion was there but her crest wasn't nearby. She had been able to see through the illusion when she had her crest. Anna had been able to see the Ocean when she didn't have her crest on, but she touched it.

"That's how it works," she whispered. "Off, can't see. Near, can see. On, see through illusions." When she said it out loud, suddenly the crest wasn't so hard to understand.

Sam noticed that he was near a large body of water. He wondered if he could reach the others through the ocean...

A figure rose out of the crystal water when he waded inside. Sam was splattered instantly with water.

The water was so darkly colored, it looked like tar. The liquid was thick as well, so Sam had a little bit of trouble making his way out of the water and onto shore to escape his assailant.

The figure loomed over Sam. The creature's voice rumbled all over the area. "Not the Inheritor of Reliability, but this should make for a good hostage to lure her out."

Her?!? 

Sam gasped. Who hadn't been captured by a Shadow Reigner before Kaez showed up? Anna, him, and Jimmee. Kaez and Anna were the only ones possible to fit this description now. And hadn't Kaez been targeted by Antylamon Virus Mode already?

Sam bit his lip to keep from crying out her name. But he didn't need to. He could sense that Anna was nearby.

Anna heard the thunderous voice and immediately ran towards it. She wove her way in and out of trees and bumps in the ground to see Zudomon X standing over Sam, who was motionless with fear.

"Sam!!" Anna shouted without thinking.

"Anna!!" Sam yelled back in fear. "We can't fight him! Run!"

Anna ran forward enough to grip Sam's hand as tight as she could without cutting off circulation. She pulled his hand and dashed away from Zudomon X as fast as her long legs could take her.

Sam and Anna slid to a stop. They panted. The ground shook as Zudomon X desperately searched for the two kids.

A small flash of light caught Sam's eye. He turned to see a small rectangular figure in the leaves of a tall tree.

"Boost me up," Sam instructed to Anna.

"Why?" Anna asked, tensing as the ground shuddered again.

"I think there's something in that tree and I want to see what it is," Sam replied.

Anna, without the time to ask questions, created a platform for Sam's small foot out of her hands. Sam stepped inside and reached for the shine as Anna stood a little higher.

Zudomon X's steps were making the ground tremble more, so Sam could tell he didn't have much more time. He grabbed at the glimmer and jumped from Anna's hands so the run could continue.

Sam unfolded his curled hand to see a red-orange crest. He smiled and threw it on. His crest. At last.

Sam could now sense every ounce of life in the area. That was his crest power, after all. He could hear Anna and his own heartbeats in his ears alone. Zudomon X's data spinning inside of his monstrous body. And Sam could also sense a few distant life forms.

Sam could feel himself fuzzing. Anna stared at her hand, feeling the same sensation. Her hand's data spiraled upwards. Anna cried out in fear as the same began happening to Sam.

Sam screamed as well. He felt his hand flying on the breeze blowing around them.

The kids shrieked one last note as the last of their data went airborne. The specks vanished in the clouds as they rose.

"Shu goy you ki. Matte e ta. A ata ma watt-OH!"

Raegan gasped as Anna sat up. The latter was panting heavily, still worn out from her narrow escape.

"Anna!" Raegan exclaimed.

Anna stood as quickly as she could. "We have to find the others!" Anna could already hear Sam's scream. Zudomon X had said something about Sam being hostage to lure her out.

"Why?" Raegan asked, panic rising in her throat.

"Sam's in danger!!" Anna grabbed her hand and pulled Raegan to Toy Town, already knowing Sam was there.

Sam sat up, panting. Ayame and Charlie leaned back as the boy stood. "Run!" he said breathlessly.

"Huh?" Charlie questioned. "Are you feeling okay?"

"I was just in the Dark Ocean. Zudomon X was there! He's coming! We have to warn the others and run before he gets here!" Sam answered quickly.

"But Zudomon X is looking for Anna, and as far as I know, she's not here!" Ayame told him.

"We're his bait! Hurry!" Sam exclaimed.

But a thunderous noise said that they were too late.
