Ayame stared at her crest and sighed. She let it flop onto her chest as she knocked on her front door.
Her older brother, Anthony, answered. His purple hair was spiky and his blue eyes shone. "Ah, Iris. Nice to see you home."
Ayame looked away angrily. "Stop saying my name like that. I prefer it in Japanese."
Anthony shrugged. "Whatever you say, Iris." Ayame glared at him. Anthony didn't care at all. He just let her in before closing the door.
Sophie, Ayame's older sister, sat at the couch reading a book. Her green eyes were behind glasses and her muted blonde hair was long and curled. "Haven't seen you in a while, Iris."
Ayame looked down. "You just now noticed?"
Sophie shrugged. "I just thought you were up at that new school. Not sure how you got in and Anthony and I didn't, but hey, do what you want."
Ayame grabbed for Falcomon's hand, but noticed it wasn't there. She had left Falcomon outside, since Anthony and Sophie found him overly interesting. She would never get upstairs with them fawning over the Digimon.
Ayame ran up to her room. She opened the door and shut it as quickly as she could. Ayame dashed across her bland room to open her window, where Falcomon flew in.
"I'm so happy that you're here now. Anthony and Sophie are no nicer than they were," Ayame told him.
"Gennai wanted everyone to check in with their families, but I don't think you favored that much," Falcomon said.
Ayame nodded. "They're still calling me Iris. I know that's my real name, but have they ever felt so forgotten they wanted to change their name to something more special?"
Falcomon shook his head. "No hardship makes no heart. They haven't gone through anything so saddening, and they don't seem to care. You have gone through it, so you're much nicer."
Ayame nodded. "I guess. But that doesn't make the hurt go away entirely."
Ayame stared at her crest. She felt over whelmed with happiness. "Honestly, this crest makes me feel just as happy as it always did. Little happiness sparking light."
Falcomon wrapped his arms around her. "You okay?"
Ayame nodded again. "Yeah." Ayame paused and smiled. "Want to go for a walk?"
——-
"Whooooop!"
Falcomon flew Ayame to the ground. The girl landed in a crouch. She laughed as Falcomon flew to a stop next to her.
"Thanks for flying me out the window, Falcomon," Ayame grinned.
"Anything for you, Ayame," Falcomon nodded. He paused, thinking through his words. "I overheard Anthony and Sophie calling you Iris. Why is that?"
Ayame sighed. "I guess I never told you. Sorry about that. You'll actually be the first I've ever told." Ayame took his hand, as if she needed some comfort about the situation. "I originally lived in America."
Falcomon gasped. "I didn't see that one coming."
"Yeah. Anthony and Sophie were the wonder twins of the school. I was just their little sister, Iris. Never got called anything else. Dad got a transfer to Japan, so we moved around the globe. Again, Anthony and Sophie became well known and everyone loved them. I started hating being called 'Iris, the little sister of Anthony and Sophie.' So I asked people to call me Ayame, which is the Japanese equivalent of Iris. I never told anybody about why but you. My family still called me Iris, but it got on my nerves more when Anthony and Sophie did it. So, I always tell them to call me Ayame." Ayame paused to take a deep breath. "Enough of an explanation?"
Falcomon nodded. "Now I see why you try so hard to be popular. So people would know you."
Ayame nodded in reply. "Yeah."
Falcomon touched Ayame's crest. "Want to go for a ride?"
——-
Ayame rode on top of Peckmon as they cantered through the park. Wind brushed throw Ayame's hair as well as the trees on the blustery day.
Ayame dismounted Peckmon like a horse. "Thanks for the ride, Peckmon."
Peckmon nodded. "Anything for you, Ayame."
Ayame stroked his head gently. "You're awesome, Peckmon."
Peckmon shrunk into Falcomon again. "I think that maybe we should get back to the school now. Maybe spending some time with your friends will cheer you up and you'll forget about Anthony and Sophie."
Ayame laughed. "Any time I'm away from them, I feel more like a person. It's weird, but the school actually is ten times better than home."
"Why don't we go back then?" Falcomon asked.
Ayame eyed a cafe just outside the entrance of the park. She smiled. "Maybe we could go and eat some croissants first."
Falcomon nodded with a grin. "I agree."
——-
Ayame leaned back in her swirly, iron back after finishing her croissant. "That was good."
Falcomon nodded. "I agree. It's been a while since I've had something that good."
"It's also been a while since we've had this much time together. It's really fun to spend some quality time with your Digimon." Ayame smiled. It was like spending some time with her Digimon made her forget all about Anthony and Sophie and all of their attention.
It was like she didn't even need her crest to provide her with some confidence, courage, and hope anymore.
But Ayame's heart sank when her Digivice beeped.
It was Charlie's voice coming through it. "MailBirdramon is attacking 4117 Melbourne Lane! It's a house with two people in it, and he's chanting your name!!"
Ayame gasped, feeling herself hyperventilate. Just because she didn't see eye to eye with her siblings didn't mean she wanted MailBirdramon attacking them. "Charlie! That's my address! MailBirdramon is there looking for me!"
Ayame's heart pounded in her ears. "I'll meet you there!" Charlie replied.
Ayame nodded. "Alright." She turned to Falcomon. "I'm sorry that our day got cut off. But I wonder, why did you do all this for me?"
Falcomon closed his eyes. "You're my partner. I don't want to see you in pain because of your siblings."
And with that, Ayame smiled, and her crest glowed on her chest. Those words seeped into her brain, and light came off of her skin. "Let's end this fight."
