Chapter Thirty Six: Return to Reality

A scream pierced Anna's ears as she found Zudomon X holding Ayame, Charlie, Sam, and their partners in his fist. She saw Ceya, Jimmee, Kaez, Maia, Tay, Kyle, and Fumiko on the next hill alongside their Digimon partners. Zudomon turned, and using his tail, smashed them into a toy house with an open door. He already knew what it did: prevented digivolution. With only two left, this fight would be over before it started.

"Let them go!!" Anna fumed. "It's not them that you're after, Zudomon X!"

Zudomon X laughed, a roaring noise that shook the ground. "No, I'm not chasing them to the ends of the Digital World like I am you. But having hostages to blackmail people with is more fun."

"I hate you beyond measure," Anna muttered angrily.

Zudomon X laughed again. "I had a feeling you'd say that."

Anna could feel a sudden wind whipping at her clothes and hair. She turned around to see a large vortex swirling in the air. It was the size of Zudomon X and glowed a dark blue color. To Zudomon X, it had the chilling sense of evil.

"Hmmm," Zudomon X said, a plan hatching in his head. He uncurled his fist, and six familiar figures went flying. Charlie, Ayame, Dracomon, Lopmon, Falcomon, and Sam.

"Sam!!" Anna cried as her fears from the Dark Ocean met reality. Renamon, hearing her voice lunged through the air and grabbed Sam. Renamon set him down and jumped for Dracomon, but it was too late.

The remaining five had gotten sucked into the vortex.

As if having heard Anna's scream, the house's door burst open to show the previous captives spilling out of the house like a glass of water that tipped over. They were almost immediately sucked into the vortex.

"I hate you!" Anna yelled, her anger level rising.

"Calumon, go!" Raegan shouted.

"CALUMON, TRIPLE DIGIVOLVE TO...BEASTMON!"

Beastmon landed on the ground, her feet making no sound. "I think it's time we ended this annoying and prolonged fight."

"I agree entirely," Raegan replied with a nod.

"Witch Warp!" Beastmon shouted. Waves radiated from her body, but the attacks did nothing to Zudomon X's tough skin.

"Is this a joke?" he asked. He swatted at Beastmon, tossing him into the portal.

"No!" Raegan shouted. Zudomon X took this as an opportunity, so he smashed the ground near Raegan, sending her flying into the portal.

"We're seriously the only ones left...!" Anna whispered in disbelief.

"Shall I digivolve?" Renamon asked solemnly.

Anna nodded. "I see no other choice."

Anna felt a little tug on her shirt. She looked down to see Sam clinging on to her as tight as he could. Tears stung his eyes. Sam wondered deep down if he would ever see Dracomon again.

"RENAMON, DIGIVOLVE TO...KYUBIMON!"

"Fox Tail Inferno!" Kyubimon shouted quickly. Flames danced on her tails and advanced at Zudomon X, trapping him in a fiery cage. Zudomon X grunted, and he spread his arms out, making the flames fly every which way. Sam clung to Anna tighter out of fear. She held him closer, afraid as well, though she wouldn't let it show.

Zudomon X saw the pair. His prey was defenseless. Zudomon X reached out his hand and wrapped it around the pair.

"No!" Renamon exclaimed. Anna heard her scream, but then everything slowed, eventually halting.

A voice slightly deeper than Sam's reached her ears. "Keeper of Illusions and Inheritor of Reliability, show this monster what for!"

Anna thought that was something Sam would say, but his mouth had remained closed the whole time. Oh well.

But Anna's mind did not dwell on this long. A familiar voice-Kyubimon's- touched her ears.

"RENAMON, DIGIVOLVE TO...TAOMON!"

Taomon stopped glowing and jumped at Zudomon X. "Brush Stroke!" She smashed the brush onto Zudomon X. The Digimon backed up screaming, and he released Anna and Sam. Taomon grabbed both of them and set the duo gently on the ground.

"Thanks," Anna whispered in awe. Taomon nodded in her direction before jumping at Zudomon X once again.

"It's time we finished this," Taomon told Zudomon X seriously. "Talisman of Light!" A gigantic symbol appeared in the air. Taomon forced it at Zudomon X.

Zudomon X screamed as there was a flash of light. His scream vanished after a few seconds.

And when the scream was gone, Zudomon X was too.

The group all smiled, even Taomon. This fight was finally over.

Anna sat down on a rock, and Sam sat a few feet away. They panted, tired out from all the Digimon attacks over the past few days.

Suddenly, a violent wind stirred up. The trio saw the vortex swirling more quickly. Sam screamed as the vortex scooped him off of his feet.

"Sam!!" Anna shouted, running towards where he was flying away. She, too, was soon swept up by the portal.

"Anna!" Taomon yelled, jumping to rescue her partner.

But she fell into the portal as well, and there were no more DigiDestined in the Digital World anymore.

Anna fluttered open her eyes to see Viximon sitting on the shelf above her bed. Viximon smiled. "I got so worried about you, Anna!"

Anna grunted as she sat up. "Why? Where are we?"

"You don't recognize your own office at the academy?" Viximon questioned.

Anna looked around. Same soccer trophies on the shelf across the room. Same black walls. Same wooden daybed and the same computer against the wall near the bed. Same wooden door with the red door knob.

"How did we get here?" Anna asked, taking Viximon down from the shelf. She held the small yellow fox in her arms loosely.

"I have a theory," Viximon murmured.

"What kind of theory?" Anna questioned.

"My theory is that the vortex wasn't really just a swirling mass of dark energy. I think that it was really a portal back to the real world," Viximon told her.

"You mean to say that all we needed to find a giant portal to get back here?" Anna asked in doubt.

"I think it might be harder than that," Viximon said. "Mainly because the cause of that portal is unknown."
