𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 (𝙅.𝙈.)

Shoupe hops onto the boat. "Where's your friend your friend you always hang with? He here?" The sheriff asks, referring to my brother. "He's working" I stated. JJ quickly smiled at me before the officer could notice.

"You got another one of these?" Shoupe asks as he lifts up a life vest. "Yeah, J show him" I say, shooting a fake smile at the officers which he kinda returns.

Kie stands up so JJ could get to the storage area under where she was sitting. "Yeah, it's right under here" JJ says as he lifts up the top to reveal a orange life preserver. Shoupe gives Kie a weird look and she shoots him a fake smile then walks over to me, hiding her face. I held back a laugh.

Shoupe starts to walk towards the front of the boat, stepping onto the bow. "That's actually quite slippery-" "You should be careful-" "be careful right there, you don't wanna slip" Me, JJ, and Pope all warn the officer at the same time, hoping to keep him from the edge where he might see John B, who should be at the 10 foot mark right now.

All of the pogues, including myself, looked at one another with worry in their eyes, knowing that if we got caught we're screwed. Shoupe steps closer to the edge. I look at JJ and he looks at me. He puts his arm around me to try and calm me down, but I feel like it was to calm himself down as well.

Of course, in the worst of times, I got butterflies. He's had his arm around me thousands of times before but this time, it was different. It wasn't just a friendly gesture, this was something else.

I hadn't even realized that I had been fiddling with one of my pogue necklaces Kie made. Only me and her had them though, it was sorta a girls thing. JJ was smiling at me. He softly took one of the charms that were on it into his free hand.

"A sunflower... I like it" he whispered into my ear which gave me shivers. 'Really J? Here?' I thought to myself.

After what felt like an eternity, Shoupe finally stepped off the bow. "Alright" he said. "Alright" JJ repeated, removing his arm from around me to walk across the boat.

"Beautiful day ain't it? Let us know if you see anything on your way out" The officer tells us before getting back into his boat and untying it. "We'll be be gone soon sir" JJ says. "Yes you will" Shoupe replies before his boat leaves.

Once the boat was far enough away, we sprang across the boat and looked over the edge to see if John B was ok. We sat there in a few seconds in silence before his head bobbed above the water.

We all laughed in relief. "Dude you scared the shit out of me" I say with a giggle. "How'd it go down there?" JJ asked with the biggest smile on his face. He's so cute.

JJ rushed over to help John B up onto the boat as he pulled the mask from his face. "Did you find anything?" JJ asked. "Did I find anything?" John B repeated, confirming that he did. "Yes!" I pumped my fist in the air and everyone laughed at me, including myself.

John B hoisted a duffel bag over the side of the boat. "That's my boy!" JJ yelled as he helped pull the bag over. "Yeah! Way to go John B!" Pope and Kie both chanted. "You ok?" Kie asked with a smile. "Yeah I'm fine" he replies. "Cops were here, but uh, we took care of 'em" Pope states. "You bet your ass we did" I say sarcastically crossing my arms.

JJ shot me a smile before laughing in excitement and high-fiving John B. "Hey guys... guys bogey two o'clock" Kie says taking a look behind me. I turned around to see a large white boat slowly making its way towards us.

"What are they doing here the marsh is closed?" Pope asks. "I mean we're here..." I say, pointing out the obvious. "JJ, Liz, get the bow line..." John B says as he stares straight at the boat. "You got it" me and JJ both say Before walking over to the anchor.

We started to slowly pull it in before Kie told us to go faster. "Guys don't wait for us don't wait for us" JJ says as we rapidly start to pull the line in. "JB let's go!" Me and Kie yell. We started moving. JJ looks at me with worry in his eyes as we were still pulling in the line.

Very soon the line was pulled in. "I don't like the look of this" John B says still staring at the boat starting to go full throttle. "Go! Go! Go!" We we're all yelling. I now shared the same look of worry as JJ.

"Down into the marsh let's go!" Pope yells then tells us to act natural. Talk about mixed signals. The boat behind us was now following us and was starting to go faster. "Guys they're following us!" Kie yells. "Shit" JB mumbled under his breath.

"Dude you gotta go faster! Gun it!" JJ yells, looking back. I was standing in the back of the pogue. I had made eye contact with one of the men, and it was honestly one of the scariest things I've ever experienced.

Seconds later, the same man pulled out a shotgun and pointed it right at me. I froze. Just before the bullet had time to hit me, we all ducked and JJ had jumped on top of me protecting me like a shield.

"Holy shit guys!" Me and Kie both yelled. "John B get down!" JJ yelled. I was absolutely terrified. JJ wasn't on top of me anymore, but he was still behind me. He had his arms wrapped around my waist, stopping me from moving. He somehow knew I would.

The man fired another shot. "Oh my god we're gonna die" Pope was curled up in a bawl at the front of the boat. Boom! Another shot fired. "Shit" Kie mumbled getting up to grab something. I saw she was heading for the fish net. I knew exactly was she was doing so I escaped JJ's grasp to help her.

We both grabbed it, still staying low. "Elizabeth! Get back here!" JJ yelled at me. I ignored him as much as it pained me too. I wanted to run back into his arms but I knew Kie needed help. Another shot was fired. "Lizzie! Kie! Get down!" John B shouted as he was the one driving the boat.

Another shot was fired before Me and Kie both grabbed an end of the net before throwing it into the water, and watching it get caught in the boat's motor. Their boat came to a stop. The man fired two more shots before giving up.

The group was all hyped up, laughing and high-fiving before they all suddenly looked at me and stopped. "What?" I asked with a giggle. I looked down to see blood rushing down the side of my leg.
