Insecurities have existed since the beginning of time, and people have always attempted to conceal their flaws and alter their appearance. However, many of these beautifying methods are hazardous, and some will have long-term negative consequences. These methods range from makeup to cosmetic surgery to starvation. Eating disorders are one of the most lethal of the many dangerous mental health illnesses. An eating disorder occurs when a person's brain and body signals, as well as their eating behaviors, do not match.
Who is to blame for this daunting occurrence? In most cases, the media is either some or all to blame for the eating disorder and standards placed for men and mostly women. Commercials, billboards, magazine ads, etc. are all forms of the media that portray negative images of women and men. When women and men in today's society see what is being advertised (which happens hundreds, if not thousands of times a day) it is not so shocking that many of them strive for these impossible body images.
As a result of the unrealistic and unobtainable images, they portray in their ads the advertising industry has dramatically increased eating problems among young males and females. However, the effect of media and advertising on both genders is important to recognize. It is important to realize that many women and men (sometimes deadly) only meet these images because of what is portrayed in Western society. If society wants to change what women and men do to themselves on a daily basis, it is up to the media to begin showing them today that it is okay to be who you are, no matter how big or small.
