Sana POV
I just sit silently waiting for Chaeyoung. Chaeyoung's dad came with coffee for all of us. He handed me one with smile and I took gratefully. He tried to convinced his wife to go home and rest for a couple of hours but she refused. Aunt Jeongyeon came out a few minutes later while Chaeyoung stayed with her grandfather. They were talking about medicine, surgery, doctors and insurance, so I kept quiet fiddling with my sleeves. Aunt Jeongyeon would check on Chaeyoung every few minutes.
Mr. Son or uncle Ji Sub that he insist me to call him like that, went to get an update from the doctor while aunt Shin Ah changed her seat to the one next to me. I gave her a quick and awkward smile then looked away nervously. I swear there was weird stretching silence between us. When I finally built the guts to lift my head, surprisedly she was looked at me with pleased expression. She smiled at me and I smile back. I raked my brain for something to say and came out with zilch.
"Thank you, Sana." She said pulling my hand in hers.
"For what?" I asked and my voice came out weird and puzzled.
I can see she take a deep breath before she finally smile.
"For everything you did-for.." She paused. Her voice quivered and chocked, eyes filling with none shed tears.
"Just, thank you for being there for Chaeyoung. I really appreciate that. Really." She added.
She seem wanted to say more when her glance averted to a point behind me.
"Sana?" Chaeyoung called in a gruff voice making me spin around.
She sound like she wasn't sure if I would still be there. Her hand reached out and I was by her side right away. Her fingers are cold. She looked more numb than she was earlier.
"Doctor Kang wants to see us." Aunt Jeongyeon said.
Aunt Shin Ah touched my cheek with a smile on her face. Aunt Jeongyeon was about to catch up with her sister when Chaeyoung stopped her.
"Let me know what he says." She said.
Aunt Jeongyeon promised and rushed off. I guided her to a seat and I took one beside her. Chaeyoung fingers clutched mine tightly. She looked pale, jaw locked tight and lips pressed.
"Are you okay?" I asked rubbing her hand with mine trying to warm it up.
She was falling in an in-haze moment, deep in thought.
"Chaeyoung.." I called her up.
Her head barely moved. So, I put my hand in her cheek and I could feel her freeze for a minute. Like she about to push me away and pull up that strong, careless that she always had. I was prepared myself to be shut out, but then she pressed her cheek to my palm. Her skin was warm, smooth and soft against my palm. Her breathing rhythm change from shallow and short to deep and steady. Feeling her breath in my wrist make my pulse go crazy. God! I bet my face turning a different shade right now. I about to pull away when she cupped my hand with her and held it pressed to her cheek. Well, if she didn't notice my pulse before, she will definitely notice it now.
"Stay.." She whisper.
"Just a moment longer." She continued.
The exhaustion in her voice pinned me. Having her resting to my palm was a silent talk. A silent share of how emotionally spent she was right now. She must be talked a lot to her grandfather and for someone like Chaeyoung, she needs a response. Knowing she won't get anything from talking to her grandfather must have been hard for her. This is her. In the weakest and it broke me. I gently moved my thumb back and forth brushing against the hard bone of her cheek.
"Are you okay?" I asked her again.
She finally nodded then pressed her cheek to my palm one last time before letting go. She cleared her throat.
"What time is it?" She asked.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and check the time.
"After midnight." I replied.
Chaeyoung flinched then stood up.
"I'm really sorry for keeping you up so late. I will asked aunt Jeongyeon to drive you home." She said worried.
I stopped her before she could make a moved.
"Uh-uh. This is nonnegotiable. I told you already that I'm staying." I said.
She then turned and face me. A weird feeling that she was looking at me struck making my heart jump.
"Hmm, but I feel guilty for keeping you at hospital on weekend. You should go back home and rest, Sana." She said.
"Well, then you and aunt Jeongyeon might have to roll me to the car because I'm not going anywhere." I said.
My loony side was taking over as I pulled her back to her seat again.
"Plus, who's going to bicker with Your Awfulness but yours truly." I said tease her a bit.
Apparently, my craziness paid off. Chaeyoung relaxed a bit and even smiled a tiny bit. She shook her head and leaned her back to her chair and so did I. We were silent for a moment, then her head titled my way.
"Thank you, Sana." She said.
Her voice carried the weight of the words. Heavy and meaningful.
"Thank you for-." I interrupt her.
"That's what friend do." I said.
I don't know how, but my head was resting on her shoulder. Hmm, I don't know but I felt calm being closer to her.
"You can always count on me." I promised.
Chaeyoung POV
My heart quivered when her head touched my shoulder and stayed there. It wasn't like usual pulling on my sleeves when she needed me to be focused. Or touching my arm when she was sympathising. Or whatever she was used to do. This is different. An easily addicted to kind of different. The sweet smell of her shampoo mixed with her perfume that filled my lungs as I breathed in deeply. Despite everything that was happening, I relaxed. My worries of losing gramps subsided for a minute to be replaced with the hopes he will be fine.
Sana's thumb would move side to side over mine. Our fingers entwined for the most of the time when we are together. Usually, she only holds my hand to get from one place to another and to be honest, a hing of sadness seeps through me when we reach our distention and she let go. But tonight, she didn't let it go of me neither did I. There's a guilty feeling of keeping her here on a weekend. But, then sprout back again when I noticed how cold her fingers were and felt her body shiver. I pulled off the hoodie that I was wearing and gave up my stupid selfishness and asked for hundreds time.
"Put this on and let aunt Jeongyeon take you home please." I even begged this time.
The hoodie slipped out of my fingers as she took it.
"Well, thank you for the hoodie but I'm not leaving until gramps is fine. That's final and stop trying to get rid of me." She said.
I don't know but hearing her saying gramps made me smile.
"You are too stubborn do you know that?" I said shook my head.
Then, I heard she sighed dramatically.
"Oh well. Tough luck! That's what you got stuck with." She said and I know she's smiling.
There was nothing I would like more. Stubbornness and all. This is Sana. My Sana.
