Two days later, nearly the entire class stood outside of Midoriya's hospital room. Those who had been knocked out by the poison gas were still recovering. We were going to try to visit them next. The only one missing was... Bakugo.
"He's probably still sleeping," Uraraka said quietly. "The doctors said he hasn't really woken up at all, and when he has, he's been delirious because of a fever."
"We're just here to visit, though," Todoroki said.
"Plus, I'd want to have friends around when I first woke up." Kaminari knocked on the door. "Wouldn't you?" Kaminari slid the door open and looked inside. He smiled. "Good, you're awake. Did you see the news? Reporters are all over the school."
"It's worse than last time," Sato agreed.
We all gathered around Midoriya's bed. There sure were a lot of us.
"I brought you a gift," Mineta said, standing right next to Midoriya's bed. He had to in order to see. Short. "We all did. It's a melon." He held it up.
"I caused you trouble, Midoriya," Tokoyami said. Apparently, he and Shoji had been attacked. Then Dark Shadow had taken control and gone on a rampage. Bakugo and Todoroki had been forced to stop him. We had really missed a lot in that classroom.
"No, please," Midoriya said to Tokoyami. "I did this to myself." He adjusted himself. His arms were both completely wrapped up and unable to move. "Did everyone from class A come to visit?"
"No," Ida said softly. He looked at the ground. "Jiro and Hagakure are still out. They were knocked unconscious from that villain's poisonous gas. And Yaoyorozu took a pretty bad hit to the head. She's hospitalized here. I just found out she woke up yesterday. So it's just us for now."
"Because Bakguo is gone," Todoroki said in his matter-of-fact voice.
Mina jumped up, embarrassed, trying to protect Midoriya. "He knows, Todoroki."
Midoriya's eyes glazed over for a moment. He was probably remembering that night. He had been there when Bakugo was taken. That was his oldest friend, apparently. Though I wasn't sure if you could classify their relationship as friends.
"All Might told me there would always be people we couldn't protect, even if we wanted to," Midoriya said quietly. "Which is why we have to save the people we can reach. I... was so close to being able to save him. I... had to." Midoriya teared up. "That's the entire reason I have my quirk. I couldn't save someone who was right in front of me."
His tears spilled over. We all stood there silently, respectfully. Most of us looked out the window or down at the ground.
"Alright," Kirishima said. He sounded calm, confident. "Then let's go get him."
We all looked at Kirishima. How?
"I was here yesterday," he continued. "So was Todoroki. We were coming to visit you when we overheard All Might talking to Yaoyorozu. She attached a tracking device to one of the villains. She gave the way to find that device to All Might."
Ida frowned. "This means you're going to have Yaoyorozu make another receiver for you, doesn't it?"
It was clear that Kirishima and Todoroki had talked this plan over already. They were on the same side. Ida though? Ida seemed against it.
"We have to leave this to the professionals," Ida burst out. "It's not the right time for us to get involved!"
Kirishima shouted back. The calm voice he had taken on earlier was because he had a plan of action. Now that action was being threatened. "Maybe, but all I know is that at camp, I couldn't do anything. I heard my friend was targeted, and I just stood by. Helpless. So if I just stand by and do nothing now, how am I supposed to call myself a hero or a man?"
