Seven the next morning, we were back in our seats. Mr. Aizawa stood at the front of the class with a whiteboard, lecturing again already. Not even five hours of sleep. That wasn't nearly enough.
A couple of hours later, Aizawa marched us out of the class and back to training.
"I'm exhausted," Kaminari said, struggling to keep his eyes open.
"You're here not just to improve your quirks but also the many weaknesses I saw during your finals," Aizawa said from behind us. Harsh. "Think carefully why you're more tired than everyone else."
I didn't want to. I'd just get depressed.
After that, we went back to training and Mr. Aizawa went around camp giving a motivational speech. It wasn't very motivational. At least I wasn't the only one struggling. Everyone was tired. The poor people who had strength quirks and had been doing nearly nothing but building up muscle for the last two days were moving like snails. I could see the life leaving their eyes.
I was stuck closer to Bakugo this time. He was sticking his hands in hot water, then setting off huge chain explosions. I wasn't sure what the water was for. I didn't bother asking. Every single time Bakugo let off an explosion, he screamed like the world was ending.
Ragdoll was making me keep my back to him and keep my senses constantly turned up. That way I couldn't know when the next scream was coming. The smell of his explosions was sharp and metallic too. It wasn't shocking, but it filled up my whole nose and it was difficult to smell anything else. Cruel, cruel, cruel heroes. At some point, Aizawa had Shoji and Hagakure come over as well and I had to help Shoji try to find Hagakure even with the screaming and smoke taking over my senses. I could see the usefulness in this one. It still sucked.
Class 1-B was here too. I couldn't help but feel that they had been let off easy. Their training wasn't quite so rigorous and they started later in the morning. Plus, none of them had extra classes. I groaned. Those were what was gonna kill me.
"We're gonna have a fun night tonight," Pixie-Bob, the blonde hero, piped up. "We're gonna be pitting classes against each other. I know you've been training hard today and later, you get to play hard!"
"That just sounds like more work," Hagakure said from somewhere right beside me.
I jumped. I hadn't even known where she was. Shoji and I had been struggling. It was only really when Hagakure got very close or accidentally stepped on a branch that we could find her. I guess now I had been smelling smoke for so long that getting close wasn't a problem for her anymore.
That night we made stew. Ida was incredibly excited. I don't know if he wanted the stew or thought it was more training. He attacked the potatoes with a peeler. I helped chop up other ingredients. The carrots, the potatoes after they had been peeled, meat, some other vegetables. I was really hoping dinner today would turn out better than yesterday's. But honestly, I would eat anything happily.
Afterwards, when it was dark and everything was clean, both classes gathered in a clearing in the woods, away from the campsite.
"It's time for the totally awesome test of courage!" Pixie-Bob announced.
"We're totally gonna win!" Mina shouted.
"Oh yeah!" Kirishima and Kaminari agreed.
As tired as I was, I was pretty excited too. It was nice to do something other than learn or train. Mina ran over and grabbed my arm, jumping up and down.
"We've got this in the bag. Woo!"
"Not so fast." Mr. Aizawa spoke up right behind us. "The remedial class will be having lessons with me tonight." He wrapped us up in his scarf so we couldn't escape. Mina looked like she was going to try anyways. "Your training during the day didn't impress me, so I'll be using this time as well."
"Ah, give us a break," Kirishima said as Aizawa dragged us away.
"I just wanna prove my courage," Sato complained.
Mr. Aizawa didn't listen. Aizawa didn't care. Aizawa dragged us away to the classrooms and sat us down so we could listen to another several hours of lectures.
I sat at the same desk as last time, trying to pay attention. It wasn't working. To be fair, I wasn't trying very hard. Every part of me was tired and I could feel my eyelids drooping already. It'd barely been half an hour.
To make just everything better, I could still smell the smoke from Bakugo's explosions. it's like it was lingering. This sucked. I was gonna have to see if I could train somewhere else tomorrow. Doing anything tomorrow sounded miserable. I was so tired. That smoke wasn't going away. I was just... so... tired...
"L/n."
Someone was nudging me. I didn't move. Maybe if they thought I was still asleep they would leave me alone.
"L/n. Psst."
Fiiiiine. I pulled my head up from my arms and blinked. I was still in the classroom. I had to blink a few more times for everything to come into focus. I must have nodded off. Aizawa was still lecturing, with his back to us. The clock in the corner showed that barely two minutes had passed.
I glanced over at Kirishima, who had been the one to wake me. "Thanks," I whispered.
Mina was asleep on my other side. Aizawa wouldn't be happy if he saw anyone asleep. I nudged her with my shoe.
"Mina," I whispered. "Mina, wake up."
She was a stubborn sleeper. I couldn't blame her. I nudged Mina again, but just then Mr. Aizawa turned around.
His scarf snapped around Mina, making her sit bolt upright. She was sure awake now. "Sleeping, are we?" Mr. Aizawa said. "Maybe we need to stay in lessons for another hour. How does that sound?"
"No, no, please, Mr. Aizawa," the class shouted. "Please don't!"
I was so glad Mr. Aizawa hadn't caught me sleeping. I glanced over at Kirishima again, thankful. That smoke smell was still lingering. What was I gonna have to do to make it go away?
Just then, the door opened.
"Oh? What is this? Six members of class 1-A bombed the final exam?" There was a high-pitched laugh. "And only one member of class B?"
Monoma. That kid was infuriating. In the door stood Vlad King, class B's homeroom teacher. He was a huge man with a red hero suit and shock white hair. He looked like he had fangs on his lower jaw or something.
I wonder what his quirk is.
Behind him, blond Monoma waltzed into the class as if he hadn't also failed the final exam and now needed the same remedial lessons as the rest of us.
"I was thinking we'd do emergency training," Mr. Aizawa was saying to Vlad. "Why don't we start with practice maneuvers?"
The big man nodded. "I agree. Maybe we start with pairing them off?"
Something sounded like a record scratch in my head.
"Everyone."
I jumped a little.
"That was Mandalay's telepath," Kirishima said. Mandalay was the brunette pro hero.
"So weird, right?" Mina laughed. "It's giving me chills."
"It is sort of annoying that it only works in one direction," Kaminari said.
Aizawa held up his hand. "Stop talking."
"Two villains attacked us," Mandalay's voice continued in my brain. "It's possible there are more coming. Everyone return to camp immediately. We're regrouping. Do not engage any enemies."
Well there was something to wake you up.
