We took a bus to the exam location. I sat two rows behind Kirishima, so I heard when he brought up the fox he had seen two nights before. He was talking to Kaminari and Bakugo about it. Bakugo mostly ignored him. Kaminari kept asking questions though.

"It was the same fox?"

"I'm pretty sure. It had all the same markings. And that white mark on its chest was the same."

"Dude, it's following you."

"I think so."

I sank down further into my seat. How could I be such an idiot? No. How could my luck be that terrible? Someone had to come out after me? And it had to be Kirishima?

The exam location was a big, circular building. We saw a few schools before going in. Shiketsu High and Ketsubutsu High. Everyone here was mostly second or third-year students, besides us. There were only a handful of other first years. It was a little nerve-wracking.

I told myself that it didn't matter much if I passed. This wasn't something I needed like everyone else. That didn't help.

We all grouped into the building. They had a huge entrance room, with a little desk on a small stage at the front. There was an incredibly tired-looking guy at the desk with a microphone that wasn't on yet.

"There are so many people," I said, looking around.

"I know," Jiro answered. "It makes me nervous."

"Don't be," Kirishima said. "We're all gonna do great and pass this."

"C'mon, Kirishima," Jiro said. "You can't tell us you're not a little nervous."

Kirishima just chuckled. Yeah, he was nervous too.

"Okay then, let's do this exam thing." The guy at the front started talking. "I'm so tired." The guy wilted. "I've been swamped and we're too short-staffed. Let's begin orientation."

I wouldn't be surprised if this guy passed out.

"Basically, there are 1,540 examinees today. You'll be competing in a free-for-all exercise, or whatever we're calling it this year. We've got a lot of pros around. Since Stain was arrested, a lot of people have expressed doubts about pros and society. But, when you really think about it, getting paid makes sense. Pros are risking their lives to save people. They might as well be compensated."

What did this have to do with the exam?

"Anyway, we have too many heroes working in the streets today. The time between when an incident begins and when it's resolved is ridiculously short. You're all trying to earn your provisional licenses, so you'll be swept up in this tiresome mess too pretty soon. Those of you who don't have the speed, frankly won't cut it. Which is why that's what you'll be tested on. The first hundred students to meet the requirements will pass today."

What a hopeful speech. Speed though? That wasn't my strength. Would this be some sort of a race or obstacle course? Those didn't make much sense for such a high-level exam, but maybe there was some sort of twist.

"There are over 15 hundred people here," Momo said next to me. "I thought they said that about half of us would be passing."

"Oh, I'm getting way more nervous," Jiro said.

"Here are the basic rules," the guy up front continued. He held up a rubber ball and a small target. "The examinee will put three of these targets on their body. They can go anywhere, as long as it's exposed. Each of you will also have six of these balls. The targets will light up whenever they're touched by a ball."

He demonstrated. "All your targets light up and you're out. Oh, and the person to get your final target gets the kill. You get through this round by taking out two other examinees."

This round? There was another? I sighed. Of course there was. So even fewer people would be passing this test than the initial 100.

"What else? I guess we'll start passing out the targets and balls. Then you'll have a few minutes after we open.

Open?

The whole building started shaking. Then the ceiling split apart to reveal sunlight. All four walls lay down. We were in a huge arena with several different terrains. There was water, some mountains, a huge city, an urban street, and a factory from what I could tell. In between it all was just a dirt field.

"I'm sure each of you has different terrains you like or want to avoid. Use your quirks well and do your best. Or not. Whatever."

Up above the arena was a large balcony that ran all the way around the huge thing. There were a bunch of seats up there. Most of them were empty, but I saw a few figures way up there. I bet one of them was Aizawa.

We ran off as a class as soon as we all had our balls and targets, heading vaguely for the mountains. Midoriya called for all of us to stick together. Bakugo, Kaminari, and Kirishima immediately split off and went their own way. Todoroki did too.

I thought of going with Kirishima and his group for a moment. Their's was the most likely to pass based off of strength. Though maybe Bakugo's rashness would negate his power. I decided against it in the end. Though I was a little sad when Kirishima ran off. I stopped running with the others. What was that feeling? Probably nothing. I was just sad he might fail because he was with Bakugo.

Midoriya was talking to Mineta. The other schools had seen the Sport's Festival. They knew our quirks. Sticking together would not only give us an advantage, we needed each other. We were going to be targets.

Sure enough, not a minute after the beginning bell rang, the students from Ketsubutsu Academy attacked. The leader was a guy with black hair who had talked to us out front. He had seemed nice. Back then.

Their first wave of attacks was blocked by Midoriya though. Tokoyami took care of a few other attacks.

One of the enemies threw a bunch of the rubber balls underground. I took a step backwards. Where were they gonna come up?

Jiro stepped forward instead, plugging her earphone jacks into the ground. She was able to take care of all of them and breaking up the ground a bit too.

The black-haired guy sent a shockwave or something through the ground. It broke the dirt up right under us, separating the class. After that, I hung out with Momo, Jiro, Shoji, and Tsu. We went to the city.

While there, we were ambushed by a group and locked in one of the buildings. Thanks to Momo's quick thinking though, we got out and passed the first half of the exam.
