It took a couple of days to get used to living somewhere new. We went back to classes the next day, which felt strange. We were all there, acting as if nothing had happened. I suppose it's good though. We've got to move on and keep growing.
A few days after moving in, Aizawa told us about the provisional hero license exam. We were supposed to have been able to earn them after the summer training camp, but... well, it didn't go so well.
We'd have to be training on our own as well as for class. I still wasn't sure I wanted to be a pro hero, but this was required so I couldn't opt out.
"In order to prepare," Aizawa said, "today you'll work on creating something new."
The door slid open and Midnight, Cementos, and Ectoplasm stepped in.
"New ultimate moves."
We met in gym gamma. It was a lot like a normal sports gym, except the whole ground was made of cement. Cementos used this to create different platforms in a mountain-like shape for us to train on.
"Your ultimate move doesn't necessarily have to be an attack," Ectoplasm was explaining.
I adjusted the color of my suit. It was new. The sleeves were mostly gone because of the heat and the design had changed a little to be less form-fitting. It was made out of my hair too now and a synthetic fabric. If I changed, the suit would change with me. I'd look like a normal fox, but when I changed back into a human, I would still have clothes on. That was a relief.
Apparently, they had gotten the idea for the design from one of the big three here at UA, who had a similar problem with their quirk.
I glanced at Kirishima as we grouped around the teachers. I still didn't want to change fully into a fox around him. Or Kaminari or Bakugo either, since they had both seen me. But Kirishima would be the most likely to recognize me.
"So it's basically something that gives us an edge no matter who or what we're facing," Sato summarized.
"The training camp was interrupted," Aizawa said, "but the work you did on your quirks is part of this process. For the next ten days of summer vacation, you'll be spending your time developing your ultimate moves."
Ectoplasm copied himself several times and the copies spread out over the different plateaus. We'd have "dummies" to work with.
"In addition," Aizawa continued, "think about how you can improve your costumes.
People came and went a lot over the next few days. They'd train for a few hours, then take a break or do their summer homework. My parents got to come and visit me once in the dorms. I didn't train very much that day.
I mostly worked on my endurance and quirk. I wasn't really sure what my special move should be. I was more of a support type, good for gathering information, not so much for fighting.
I fought with one of Ectoplasm's doubles on a platform. I was frustrated. I didn't know what direction to go in. What would an ultimate move look like for me?
"Use your senses while fighting me," Ectoplasm suggested.
I heightened all my senses. My nose grew longer and darker, my eye bled into gold slits, and my ears become those of a fox. It was harder to move like this, especially for very long. There was so much going on around me.
"Hey, L/n."
I stopped, breathing heavily. Kirishima was just climbing onto the platform beneath me.
"Oh, hey Kirishima."
"How's your ultimate move coming along?"
I sighed. "Not well. I can't think of how to specialize my quirk."
"It's most heightened senses, right?"
"Uh... yeah."
Kirishima frowned. "That is a hard one. And you still have to come up with a hero name too."
I paused. "I do? A hero name?"
"Yeah. We did that before you came, so you've still got to do it. I'd tell Aizawa once you figure yours out." He chuckled. "I don't envy you."
I sighed again. I didn't even know if I wanted to be a hero. I should probably pick out a hero name before it's too late though, just in case.
Fennec would be interesting. It's a type of fox, but not the type I turn into. I'm a red fox. That name might cause some confusion. Vixen makes me sound too old. Too much like Midnight.
Well, what do I do? I can turn into a fox. That's not something I want to highlight if I can help it. I can change my senses. I'm good at stealth, info gathering, and tracking. Tracker? Maybe.
If I focused on the tracking aspect of my quirk, what could I do with that? I've mostly been ignoring it. It takes not only my senses but my awareness. I have to not only see that there's a footprint, but process it and decide if that's my target or not. It takes more work and hasn't been helpful yet. That doesn't mean it won't be in the future.
"Kirishima, don't," I say.
Kirishima freezes. I looked down at him. I hadn't been watching him. He's half a step away from the edge of his platform and about to step off it. He glances down at his feet.
"Oh," he says. "Uh, thanks, L/n." He goes back to training.
I hadn't been watching him. I couldn't even see him in my peripheral vision, the direction I had been facing. My senses were all still heightened. Could I have been able to tell how he was moving by that? How?
It was the smell, definitely. Being able to sense where he was and where the rock ended. But it was the sound too. The way he moved, I could tell by listening. I try to do it again. It's difficult and I get it wrong more often than right. I guess it's easier to do when I'm not trying to do it. I'll have to fix that.
That's cool. I don't know if that's good enough for an ultimate move. I watch Jiro and Shoji leave the gym, one right after the other. They both have sensory quirks like me. Unlike me though, they both have attacks of some sort. Shoji is inhumanly strong and Jiro can use her heartbeat as a weapon.
I don't have anything. That can't be safe. If I ever got in a fight, I'd have to brawl and I'm not the strongest person out there. Senses wouldn't help too much in a one-on-one fight.
"I want to work on an attack," I said to Ectoplasm.
He nods. "Alright then. What can your quirk do offensively?"
I hesitate. "Nothing, as far as I know. I have all the senses of a fox." I glance down at Kirishima. He's not paying any attention to us up here. "And I can turn into a fox."
"Perhaps you can turn into a fox middair, or during a fight and catch your opponent off-guard."
"That's not enough for an ultimate move though, is it?"
"You have no offensive attacks at the moment. We'll start with something small and work our way up to an ultimate move. Come at me."
I glance down at Kirishima. He's incredibly focused on fighting his his Ectoplasm double. He's fighting hard, putting everything into every punch. He looks so determined. He won't be watching, right? Hopefully.
"Alright." I run in, swinging.
