I was on patrol with Kirishima. Just my luck. The four of us, Fat Gum, Suneater, or Tamaki Amajiki of the Big Three at UA, Kirishima, and me, walked along the late-night streets of the city. It wasn't too late. The moon was still up in the sky and there were a lot of people out. Fat Gum was eating, as always. He needed it for his quirk.
Fat Gum was talking about how his agency had needed quirks like mine and Kirishima's. Suneater kept his hood pulled up pretty far. He wasn't very positive. He didn't seem to like being around people. I could understand that. Kirishima tried to encourage him. It didn't work at all.
"By the way, L/n," Fat Gum said, "You're patrolling now as a real hero. You're going to need a hero name."
Right. I had been trying to think of one, but couldn't settle on anything. "Yeah," I said. "I guess I don't have one in mind yet."
"We're gonna have to call you something until you do," Kirishima said. "I'll call you Ears until then."
"...Ears?"
"Yeah, cause when you try to hear better, you grow those fox ears. It's really cool."
"I'm not so sure I love that name."
Kirishima laughed. "Then come up with something better. Until then, it's Ears."
I heard people running towards us from behind. I dialed up my hearing to get a better idea of what was going on. I felt a little self-conscious as my ears grew. Kirishima grinned at me. That didn't help.
"There's a group of thieves running towards us. They've taken something."
"On it," Fat Gum said.
The thieves barreled around the corner and ran smack into Fat Gum, who had stepped in front of them. I didn't know he could move so fast. I guess he was a pro.
"What the-" the villains shouted.
One of them wiggled free with a quirk like Edgeshot's. Fat Gum called out to the rest of us. Suneater grabbed the thief with... tentacles? His fingers had grown into long tentacles. Then one hand became a large clamshell. He took care of the villain quickly.
Fat Gum walked over. He had enveloped the rest of the thieves into his fat. Their heads poked out, but they were fully stuck. It was a funny sight.
"That's our Suneater," he said. "He's incredibly strong."
Suneater pulled his hood further over his head and hunkered down. A crowd had formed around us. They were cheering for Fat Gum and Suneater. I smiled. Heroing wasn't so bad maybe.
A gunshot rang out. It was like it moved in slow motion. I was probably the only one who could see it. I guess my reflexes were heightened as a partial fox at the moment. There was a red bullet.
Heading straight for Kirishima. He wasn't hardened. It could kill him.
I didn't even have a moment to think. I was moving before I had fully processed anything. Kirishima was so bright and happy. He had so many hopes and dreams. He wanted to help people. He wanted to save everyone he could and make them happy. He was a better person than I was. I couldn't let him die.
The bullet hit me in the stomach. I keeled over, falling onto my back.
"L/n, no!"
Kirishima jumped in front of me as a second bullet flew at us. It just bounced off him.
"It's Ears," I said, standing up. I didn't love the name, but I couldn't let villains know my real name.
"Are you okay?"
I grunted. "I thought that would hurt more."
The villain had a shock of white hair and a crooked mouth. He shouted when he saw that Kirishima hadn't been hurt at all the the bullet and dropped his gun. He sprinted away.
"On it," Kirishima shouted and dashed after him.
The two disappeared into the crowd.
"Ears," Fat Gum said. "Where are they?"
I tried to dial up my senses. Nothing happened. I started to panic a little. "My quirk. Something's wrong. My quirk won't activate."
Fat Gum stopped. "It's not working at all?" He turned back around.
"I shook my head. It's like it's not even there. I can't hear better, or change into a fox, or grow anything to attack."
"Alright. Red Riot can handle that small fry for a minute. The police are going to be here soon."
"I can handle it," I said. "Go help him."
"Are you sure. I don't think-"
"I'm sure. Suneater's here too."
"I'm not gonna be much help," Suneater mumbled.
Fat Gum paused. "All right. I'm gonna go help Red Riot. Suneater, stay with Ears. You two tell the police what happened. He pushed the dazed villains out of his stomach. "And get handcuffs on these guys."
I nodded and Fat Gum ran off in the direction Kirishima had gone. I hoped he was okay. That thief didn't seem like too big of a threat. He was probably fine. I tried to dial up my senses, any single one of them. Nothing happened. It felt like I was trapped in my own body.
Suneater and I put handcuffs on all the villains before they could come to their senses.
"What's that?" Suneater asked.
I glanced down at my stomach. There was a little red bullet sticking out of my costume. That was what the villain had shot at us. I pulled it out. There was a tiny needle at the end.
"It must have injected something."
"That must be what stole your quirk," Suneater said.
I nodded, feeling unsettled. The police came a minute later. Suneater and I helped them get all the villains into cop cars to drive off to the station. Then we told the police everything that had happened. I handed over the bullet as well.
The police had never seen anything like it before. They hadn't heard of bullets or injections that could steal quirks either. That wasn't comforting.
Kirishima and Fat Gum came back after a bit. They were gone longer than I thought they'd be. Fat Gum had the final villain stuck and handed him over to the police.
"We'll head back to the agency."
We nodded and started off.
"Are you all right?" Kirishima asked, walking next to me.
I could feel my face starting to heat up. Which was stupid. He was just talking to me.
"I'm good."
"Thanks for stepping in front of me. You didn't have to do that."
"I didn't really think about it before I moved. I mean, I rationalized about it afterwards, but I just moved."
Kirishima grinned. "That's what a hero is."
It is? I'm a hero? I saved someone? I guess Kirishima's my picture of a hero. And I'm nothing like him.
I smiled. Maybe I'd get there someday.
