"This is the spot the tracker is broadcasting from," Momo whispered.
"So that's their hideout?" Kirishima looked past her. "It's not a bad one, I guess."
We were away from the busy shopping areas of Kamino Ward now. The night was a lot darker without all the bright lights. We were among warehouses and storage buildings now. There was almost no one around.
Our group stood on a side street across from the building in question. We were pushed up against the wall. The windows of the hideout were dark, but you never knew. There could be someone watching from those front windows and it was better to not be seen for a stealth mission.
"According to the tracker, the villain hasn't left this place for the past day," Momo said, looking at her receiver, "but that's all we know." She turned to the rest of us. "One villain is hiding here, but that could be it. They could be keeping Bakugo somewhere else. We're going into this completely blind for the most part. Please try to proceed logically."
"I don't like this," Ida said. "None of us are very good at sneaking around. If I think things are going to be the least bit dangerous, we're done. I won't hesitate to call the police either."
"Thank you, Ida," Midoriya said. Then he crouched down and started muttering to himself, trying to come up with a plan.
This was awkward. I was good at sneaking around. I glanced at Kirishima. But that would give away a few things and just be plain awkward. As a fox, I had run across Kirishima many times. He'd even brought me into his house. I'd really, really rather he didn't find out about the full extent of my quirk.
"They're hiding in plain sight," Todoroki said, staring at the building. "It looks like any other abandoned warehouse."
Just then, a group of very drunk men wandered by, laughing like crazies. They stumbled over each other. A bit later, two women holding each others arms wandered past.
"It's not crowded but there are people around," Todoroki said.
Midoriya nodded. "Let's go around the back."
"Wait," I said. "Let me go."
The group all turned to me, confused. I looked down at the ground. If I was here, I might as well be useful. I didn't want to be dead weight with people like Kirishima caring so, so deeply.
"My quirk is good for stealth. I'll also be able to see or hear anything better than the rest of you."
"That's dangerous for you to just go by yourself," Kirisima said.
"It would be more dangerous for everybody to go at once. We're more likely to be seen."
The group looked around at each other.
"She's right," Todoroki said. "She should go."
"I don't like it," Kirishima said.
"I'm going. Momo, would you come over here with me?"
"Uh, sure."
I led Momo away from the others into a small corner where no one could see either of us. To do this best, I was gonna have to become a fox for real but I really didn't want Kirishima to see me. Plus, my clothes were going to come off. I couldn't just leave them lying around in an alley. I had to trust someone with my small secret. Better Momo than anyone else.
"I can become a fox," I told her. "Not just use a fox's enhancements."
"What? You can? Why haven't you told anybody? Why haven't you used it before?" All fair questions.
"It's kind of... awkward," I said. I looked around to make sure there really wasn't anybody nearby. The corner was so small that Momo could cover me for the most part anyways. "My clothes don't transform with me," I said.
Momo nodded slowly. "Yes, that makes sense why you wouldn't want to change then."
"I'm going to change into one now though. It's our best bet to get some intel on the building and also not be recognized."
Momo nodded.
"I need you to keep my clothes and... also not let any of the guys know."
Momo frowned. It was a little hard to see in the dark and behind her sunglasses. "But why not?"
"Just... I don't want them to know right now. I'll tell them some other time when Bakugo isn't in danger." Only if I really, truly have to.
"Alright then. I'll do it."
I nod and take a breath. My legs are a little shaky and the tips of my fingers have gone cold. I'm afraid. I don't want to go in there.
I think of Kirishima then. He cares so much. It's eating him alive that Bakugo has been captured. Is something wrong with me? I should care that much too, right? Why aren't I more like Kirishima?
"Okay," I whisper. "Here I go."
I shrink down into a fox. My nose and years grow, I get the tiny, black feet and the long bushy tail. My coat is glossy and red.
Momo starts picking up and folding my clothes. She nods to me as I trot out of the corner and turn away from the guys. I really don't want them to see me. I'll take a longer route to get there instead.
A few people see me as I trot past. One shouts at me, clearly drunk. I little girl being held by her mom calls out and points. She's so far past tired. I wonder briefly why she's out so late.
The space between the abandoned warehouse and the next building beside it is barely enough for me to squeeze through as I am. A person could not walk down this normally. They'd have to shimmy down it sideways.
There's nothing on my level to see into the warehouse. There's a ledge up above me. I can maybe try to jump up?
Nope, no good. I made a bit of noise falling back down too. I sit silently for a moment. No one seems to have heard though. How am I going to get up there then? Well, there is always the option of turning human again, then jumping and changing midair. I wouldn't have any clothes on though.
I look up and down the narrow alleyway. With my night vision, I don't see anyone. It's still unfortunate though. I look back up at the ledge. Ugh.
I turn into a human. It's a lot colder than as a fox. I'm crouched down in the alley, my back and me knees are pressed up against the two sides of the alley. I look up again. It's a whole lot darker. It smells... cleaner too. I guess I'm not able to smell something now. That doesn't make me feel very good about this situation.
I stand up sideways. Yeah, I definitely couldn't turn and walk down this alley normally. I look up at the ledge again. Here goes. I jump. Midair, I turn into a fox again. Almost there...
I land on the edge of the ledge, but only barely. One of my paws slips off and my heart races. I don't fall though.
I can see now that I'm just up on the wall. The actual warehouse is about two feet in front of me. That's unfortunate. There's a window a little bit farther down though. It has no glass on it, only iron bars. I might be able to squeeze through. If nothing else, I can at least see into the building there.
I trot over on the wall. The window is maybe a few inches higher than where I am on the wall. That's fine though. With my fox legs, I can easily make the jump.
There's a weird smell, I notice as I crouch down to jump. It smells dirty again, but it's something more than that. Musty maybe? I can't quite tell.
I jump over to the window and land quietly. Perfect. Now, what's in the abandoned warehouse?
It's not too hard to see with my night vision eyes, though I can definitely tell it's dark in there. I wouldn't be able to see anything normally.
There's trash and old boxes and piles of rubbish everywhere. It looks like any other abandoned warehouse. There's nothing in here...
The back left. There's something there. It looks like metal boxes attached to the ground with no tops. There's a ton of pipes and tubes coming out of all of them. They have some sort of liquid in them. Liquid holding what looks like brains. Nomu. That looks like nomu. And there's so many of them. I'm gonna be sick.
