"Hey, L/n, let's go train."
I glanced up at Kirishima. It was the middle of a nice weekend. I had been planning on training sometime today anyways, but why did Kirishima want to train together? "Uh, okay."
We walked to one of the gyms together. Kirishima talked along the way.
"I heard you've got a new attack with some claws and teeth, right?"
I nodded.
"I figured I could help you out there. Other people would get hurt if you scratched at them or bit them, but I won't feel a thing."
I smiled. "Thanks a lot, Kirishima. I've been struggling to practice with this." I laughed. "As long as you don't mind me biting you."
"Anything to get stronger."
There was a training gym near our dorms. No one was in there at the moment, so we went in.
"So do your claws just sort of appear?"
"Not really. It works the same as my ears, and eyes, and nose, at least that's how it looks. I have to work different muscles to change them. I guess my nails just sort of... grow? And morph into more of a fox's look."
Kirishima nodded and solidified his arms. "Come attack me."
I grew my nails and teeth out and attacked. I could tell Kirishima was holding back. I was so unused to using nails or teeth for fighting. It took longer than it should to get over the initial embarrassment. Even then, I was slow and clumsy.
"So can you call foxes to you?"
I paused, already breathing heavily. "I don't think so."
Kirishima nodded and fell into a fighting stance again. I ran at him. "Maybe you've got like a fox magnet or something."
I slashed at him. He could have dodged easily but he blocked instead. I guess he wanted to train his quirk too. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I've been thinking about the little fox guy that follows me around." I stumbled. "Careful. And it started happening since I moved next to you. And now the fox is here too, at school."
I took a few steps back. Had he found me out? Ugh that would be so embarrassing.
"And I think it's because of you," Kirishima continued. He let his arms go back to normal and also stood up straight. I guess he thought I was resting. This wasn't good at all.
"I think you're some sort of fox homing beacon."
"What?"
"You know, like they come to you. Cause I've seen that one fox around, starting when we moved next door. And now we're both at the dorms and the fox is here again. And there was that other one in the bushes."
I relaxed so suddenly that I almost feel the need to tear up. "Yeah," I said weakly. "I bet I've got something like that."
"That's pretty cool though. Maybe you could upgrade your quirk somehow and manage to summon the foxes to help you or something. That would be awesome. A fox army."
"That'd be awesome." I was just repeating him. I knew I was.
"Anways," Kirishima crouched down again and hardened himself, "do you want me to attack you now?"
"Uh, what?"
"You should learn how to defend too."
I hesitantly crouched into a fighting stance. He was probably right. I guess it just caught me off guard. "Yeah."
Kirishima nodded and attacked me. He was clearly moving more slowly then he could have. Thankfully, he wasn't one for feints. I was moving slow too. The sudden relief was slowing me down. He hadn't found me out yet.
But it got better. I got better. Kirishima sped up his attacks. Then I wasn't just dodging and blocking. I was attacking too. We fell into a rhythm. Kirishima was still holding back, I could tell, but it wasn't quite so embarrassing anymore.
Eventually, I did trip over my feet. I fell onto the ground, laughing. Kriishima was laughing too. We were both hot and sweaty and I felt gross. But a good kind of gross. I hadn't felt that good in ages.
"I think," Kirishima said through laughter, "I think we should call it there."
"Yeah." My own laughter slowed. "I think so."
Kirishima held out his hand to help me up. "C'mon, I'll take you to get lunch."
I dusted myself off. "No. No, you can't do that."
He just grinned. "What kind of a man would I be if I had you train with me and didn't at least buy you lunch."
I hesitated. Then laughed again. "Alright then."
After a quick shower in the locker room to rinse the sweat off and a pair of fresh clothes, I bet Kirishima at the edge of the UA campus.
We laughed together for a while. It was easy, cheap food. Kirishima was easy to talk to. It was really nice.
We walked back to the dorms together afterwards. There were a few people sitting in the common area.
"See ya later, L/n."
I nodded as Kirishima walked away, waving. I was still smiling. I watched him all the way as he walked around the corner and into the common area's kitchen. He was probably going to make something. I wonder if he could cook well. I wonder if he'd mind if I helped out. Then we could hang out a little or something.
I froze.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh no.
