The school Festival was coming up. And we were doing a concert. The rest of the class, everyone who didn't have to make up classes, decided on having others do a choreographed dance too. That way everyone would have something to do.
Unfortunately, I didn't know how to play any musical instruments. I also didn't have a quirk suited for special effects. That meant I was on the dance crew.
"You're gonna do great!" Mina assured me. "We have practice all the time so everyone will be sure to know it. We'll have you dancing in your sleep by the time the Festival rolls around!"
"Yay," I said lamely.
"You've got it, L/n," Kirishima said. "You'll do great!"
"Says you on the special effects team."
He just laughed. "You don't have to do it if you don't want to. There's another place for you. I guarantee it."
"No, no. I'll do it."
He nodded. "That's the spirit!"
When we weren't taking classes, we were practicing, when we weren't practicing, we were helping with any one of the hundreds of other tasks that needed doing.
One evening, I stayed out by the gym later than normal, finishing a few things with the electrical. I didn't know much, and I wasn't doing much, but Kaminari had taught me a few things. He had ditched me about fifteen minutes ago. I forgave him since he was helping with dinner tonight.
"L/n, can you help us?" Hagakure called to me.
I looked over to see him and Kirishima trying to steady a ladder. I tied off the ends of my electrical work and jogged over. "Yeah, what's up?"
"So, we need to get up into the rafters, right?" Hagakure said. "We just need to fix the wires up in that box over there. You see it?" She pointed to the little electrical box. "But you see the rafters to get over there? They're so thin and flimsy."
"We thought you could get up there more easily than us, since you can turn into a fox," Kirishima added.
"Oh, uh," I looked harder at the path between the ladder and the old wiring. "Yeah, I can do that."
"Great! Thank you so much!" Hagakure hugged me.
The two of them held the ladder while I climbed up. The main rafters up here were just fine. Those were the ones that the special effects crew was going to use for the concert. However, beyond those nice wide walkways were a bunch of old, rickety, wooden ones that looked ready to fall down soon. Thankfully, my weight was cut drastically, even as a partial fox.
I looked down. I could see Kirishima and Hagakure's floating clothes beneath me. Turning into a full fox would be unfortunate. I didn't have my hero costume on. I could still change a lot of my structure to be a lot lighter and more agile without losing my clothes though. I think I'd be fine just doing that.
I crept across the rafters, making sure to go very slowly and carefully. A couple of the dipped dangerously when I stepped on them. A few others liked to wobble. I made it to the wall safely though.
"I made it," I called down.
"You're the best!" Hagakure shouted back up.
I opened the old box. I could see thanks to the lights on behind me. A couple of the wires were crossed. A little test told me they were fine to work with though.
"Hagakure, can you come help us out?" I heard someone from outside shout in.
"Hey, L/n, I'm gonna go help another group, okay?" she shouted up.
"Sounds good."
A couple more minutes of work and I was done. "Alright," I called down. "I'm coming back."
"I'm right here," Kirishima called from the base of the ladder. I could see him from here.
I crossed back over the rafters more quickly, remembering the spots to hurry over. They still wobbled. They were wobbling a lot actually. Had this one moved so much last time- I fell.
"Kirishima!"
I was in the middle of the wood. I didn't have anywhere to grab onto. The plank was falling with me. I could see the ceiling rushing away from me. There was nothing I could do.
Someone caught me.
"Uff."
"Hey there."
I looked up to see Kirishima smiling down at me. He was holding me, bridal style. I could feel my face heating up. He just laughed.
"You don't have to be embarrassed."
I covered my face. He just laughed more. He didn't put me down though. I didn't squirm to be let down either.
I let my hands fall. I stared at them in my lap. "Sorry."
"For what? For falling?"
I nodded.
"You're alright. I caught you, didn't I?"
I nodded again. I was really glad no one else was here to see this.
"L/n?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I kiss you?"
...
"What?"
"You can say no."
And just like that my face is back to a deep, deep shade of red. "I- no- that- that wasn't a no. I just-"
Kirishima chuckled. I could feel it bouncing around in his chest. He was really close. He waited for me to answer though. He didn't rush me or anything.
"Yeah," I whispered.
Then he did. It was gentle. He was firm though. It wasn't a question. It was like he wanted it. I kissed him back. I was more unsure. I'd never kissed anyone before. I didn't want it to seem like I didn't want him too though. Because I did. I really did.
We broke off the kiss. It wasn't a long one or an especially passionate one. I was blushing anyway. Of course I was. I covered my face again.
Kirishima laughed and let my legs swing down. He didn't let go of my back though, instead pulling me into a hug. He rested his chin against the side of my head. My hands were still hiding my face.
"Can we do that again sometime?" he asked.
"Yeah." My answer was muffled both by my hands and by the hug.
Despite my embarrassment, I found myself smiling. This was going to be a good festival after all.
