When Luke woke up, Michael was not next to him.
Luke woke up in the middle of the middle, the alpha was holding him so close that Luke's face was pressed against his neck, and that he could not move even if he wanted to.
He didn't want to.
Now, he felt empty and lonely and a bit hurt.
There was a note on Michael's desk written in the boy's messy handwriting.
Had to leave early for uni.
See you on Friday.
Luke sighed. He knew Michael was lying and he only had classes on Monday evenings and he usually left as late as he possibly could. And Luke knew he promised the young alphas a run through the woods today.
When he walked downstairs, the littles were already having their breakfast and he got distracted by their smiles and high energy. Noelle wiggled her way on his lap and Lucas brought him his coffee.
"Michael's mum is having our wolf lessons today," Lucas informed him.
"What are the rest of you doing?" Luke asked the twins who got him a plate of pancakes.
"We're having chemistry experiments with a teacher from a nearby school who volunteers to help," Rue explained.
"It's cool as we can do some of the experiments outside," Freddie added.
Luke smiled at his comment. Ever since he moved here, he realized how much calmer the forest made him. Not just the fear of other people's judgment but the proximity of the trees and nothing but trees for miles spoke to his inner wolf.
Later, Luke found himself only half listening to Mrs. Clifford as she talked about the current state of the werewolf culture in the country.
After less than one out of the two hours that they were supposed to spend together, Michael's mother sent Lucas outside to join the rest of the children.
"Luke, next time you're not feeling like spending time with me, just say it."
"I'm sorry, Mrs."
"No, no need to apologize, but these are important lessons and I need you to be present enough to hear them." After Luke nodded, she continued. "Now, please tell me what's bothering you."
After a minute of choosing his words, Luke spoke up. "Does Michael always run away from things?"
Karen smiled, partly because she knew Luke's mood was about her son and partly because she was impressed by how well Luke knew Michael already.
"Michael is very bad at communicating his feelings." She started. "He is an only child, as you know and he had spent a lot of time with just me Daryl. Because we're his parents and wolves, we can usually read him like an open book which didn't help with his communication issue at all. We knew when he was upset and we calmed him down. We read his every mood, every worry."
Luke bit his lip. That made a lot of sense.
"And if you were suggesting him going away this morning, you were correct. He was running away." Her smile was warm. "I'm not sure what is going on between the two of you but my guess is that Michael is conflicted about your relationship and doesn't know how to approach you about it."
The problem was, Luke wasn't sure either. But he wasn't like Michael. He couldn't and didn't want to run away.
Instead of going to his room, he returned to Michael's. It felt more like a safe space than his room did.
The alpha's scent, his comfortable bed, and the warmth of his blankets were more inviting.
Luke climbed on the bed and after a moment of hesitation texted Michael.
To: Michael
we need to talk so please don't avoid me when you come back (:
Luke still had an hour till lunch and didn't feel like doing anything, so he covered himself with a blanket and closed his eyes.

Michael felt bad for lying to his professors when he emailed them explaining he had an emergency at home and will have to miss a few classes.
Most of them knew and understood his home situation so they probably thought the emergency was a werewolf gone mad.
But it wasn't.
The emergency was Luke.
He wasn't sure why he thought running away from Luke would help him gain perspective on the problem when most of the time the problem was that he wasn't close enough to Luke.
Not as close as he wanted to be.
The moment he got Luke's text, the alpha packed his things, wrote the emails, and left.
Still, he had a few stops he promised his mother he'll make, and when he got back it was just before the sun had set.
The kids were beyond thrilled to see him and he apologized and promised to take them to the wood the next day. His mother only smiled at him and nodded towards the upper floors.
Michael smiled back and rushed up the stairs.
To his surprise, Luke wasn't in his room but he could hear soft snores coming from the room next to Luke's.
When he opened the door, a weakness ran through his body as he saw the omega sleeping under his blankets, on his bed.
Michael sat down on his chair as he tried to collect himself. The boy he wanted to protect more than anything felt safe and calm in his room, his bed.
He could feel every emotion like this when Luke was asleep and vulnerable. But he wasn't the only one who could feel the other's presence. Luke opened his eyes and smiled when he noticed Michael for just a second, before scrunching his eyebrows.
"Mikey," Luke rubbed his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to talk." Michael smiled at the sleepy omega.
