"Prince?"

Look looked up and noticed Prince Michael standing in front of him. "Yes?"

"Do you mind if I write my letters here?"

Luke shook his head and nodded towards the empty table next to the window.

The younger prince was spending hours in the library, reading books on magic. Secretly, Luke was also going through family trees of royal families as he lost faith in Michael teaching him anything.

He wasn't sure how it happened but it's been three weeks since Prince Michael has arrived and he and Luke only spoke a few times. If Luke wouldn't be an optimist who believed in the good in people, he'd think Michael was avoiding him. However, he just accepted all and any excuses that were made against them spending time together.

When Michael first arrived at the castle, Luke asked him if he wanted to be shown around the premises and he accepted. Somehow both Ben and Jack joined them on the walk and Luke was left a few steps behind, trying to catch up.

One time, Luke and Michael were supposed to go and get their wedding clothes fitted but for some reason, Kind Andrew wanted a word with Michael.

When his mother noticed the dilemma, she made sure Luke and Michael were seated next to each other when Luke's uncle and cousins were visiting. It turned out, they were friends and Michael spent the evening laughing about memories Luke didn't share with them.

There were also multiple times Luke tried to start a conversation with the prince and his answers were short or he made an excuse for himself.

The one time Luke asked him about his magic, the Prince of New South Wales looked him in the eyes and told him to never, ever, ask someone about their magic.

When Luke asked his teacher about it, Calum agreed but advised that Luke should observe other royals and try to get a sense of their magic.

Following the advice, Luke observed his family and noticed his father only used magic when he practiced with his wife. Queen Elizabeth insisted on using magic so the king wouldn't forget how to use it. She, on the other hand, used magic frequently but only around family and close servants and companions.

Luke's mother's magic was strong. She could light candles and turn pages, her tea was never cold and her sons could feel her icy glare when they'd upset her.

Ben's magic was there, but his focus was not. Luke could not blame him, with the weight of being the next king on his shoulders, he had no time to read and practice. One thing Luke did notice was Ben's ability to read the sky. He knew the weather and the wind. Prince Ben would always return from his walks before the storm and he'd train inside when the sun could burn his skin.

Jack's magic was different. He loved chemistry and potions and when he was young, he made one or two explosive devices that drove the king's guard insane. Jack could also taste every small ingredient and recognize someone's presence by scent alone.

There was also his fighting intuition. Jack was the best fighter of all of his brothers.

The only person who came close to him was Michael. His archery and fencing were above any level Luke had seen and his father's army was known to be one of the best on the island.

One thing that Luke had trouble recognizing was Michael's magic. His family was different as he knew them with or without magic. However, the prince was a mystery. He was an only son so there was no telling how strong it should be.

Luke couldn't even recognize if anything Michael said or did was interlaced with magic.

His fighting, while amazing, could be a result of years of training. But then again, anything he did or said could be a result of magic or just him.

As he observed the back of his head, Michael suddenly spoke up. "Prince?"

"Yes?" Luke looked down and blushed, thinking Michael could see his reflection in the window, and notice him staring.

"Can I borrow books from the library or do any of them contain secrets I'll be killed for reading?"

"You may," Luke answered, not appreciating Michael's joke. "All books that are not meant to be read are locked in my father's study. The rest you can borrow. The servants will appreciate if you let them know if you take any, or you can just write the titles in the book on the table next to the door."

"Thank you," Michael simply replied and leaned back over his piece of paper.

"Prince?" This time Luke spoke up.

Michael turned around and took Luke by surprise. This seemed easier when Michael's light eyes weren't piercing through him.

"Do you think I can ruin things at the wedding for my family?"

Michael was quiet for a moment before replying. "You'll do just fine."

Luke bit his lip and nodded in goodbye.

"That's why I'll be there," Michael added and turned back to his letter.

That's when Luke realized that he might not know anything about the prince's magic. But he heard the rumors of Michael's kindness and intelligence.

And even the servants who always had a lot to say only praised Michael's presence.

Luke decided he'll no longer try to be Michael's friend. He'll just make sure he won't be his enemy.
