summary - The one at the wedding reception

-----

You had been pining after Tom for over a year now. What started off as innocently thinking he was cute quickly escalated into a full blown crush. And between the cute conversations and random jokes the two of you would share, you sometimes wondered if he possibly liked you too. You never allowed yourself to look too much into it, though. After all, he was Tom and you were just you. Guys like him did not fall for girls like you. But he was your friend, and if you could only have him in your life that way, you'd take that over not having him at all.

Your friend (Y/F/N) was planning to get married. When she asked you to be a bridesmaid, you said yes with no hesitation. When she told you you could bring a date, your heart fluttered at the idea of bringing Tom. He was by far your closest guy friend, so asking him to accompany you wouldn't be weird at all. So, you did. He said yes quickly, expressing how exciting it sounded and how happy he was that you asked him.

The date of the wedding arrived and the ceremony went flawlessly. No one tripped down the aisle and (Y/F/N) managed to get through her vows without crying. It was time for the reception and you were a perfect combination of excited and completely terrified. You agreed to meet Tom outside the venue so you could walk in together. He hadn't gone to the wedding ceremony as (Y/F/N) didn't know him well enough to invite him, but as your plus one he obviously got a spot at the reception. You waited anxiously for him and felt your heart flutter when you saw him. He jogged up to you, a wide smile on his face. "Hi," he said breathlessly. He immediately pulled you in for a hug which made your smile grow wider.

"Hi," you said back.

"You look great," he said, still smiling at you.

"Thanks," you said. "So do you. Do you want to go inside?" He nodded so the two of you walked in. Tom opened the door for you and you thanked him and walked ahead. You felt your eyes grow wide at the sight of the reception. It was a barn that was so beautifully decorated and so charming, it was clear that (Y/F/N) had truly gone all out with planning it all.

"So where are we seated?" Tom asked, standing beside you and laying a hand on the small of your back.

"At the head table of course," you smiled. "Now, you go ahead and take your seat. I have to enter with the bridal party but I promise I'll be there soon. Go mingle. You're good at that."

"I know," Tom grinned. You rolled your eyes and gave him a little shove into the reception hall while you turned around and went to the area where the bridal party was set to meet.

"Is Tom here?" (Y/F/N) asked as soon as you walked over.

"I just told him to take his seat," you nodded.

"Good," she smiled. "I'm glad this is happening for you."

"Nothing is happening for me," you said back. "And anyway, tonight is about you."

"I know," she agreed, "but I'm allowed to spend a moment thinking about you and your love life."

"Or nonexistent one," you joked back.

You entered the venue with the wedding party and immediately went to go sit beside Tom. He smiled at you and stood up to pull your chair out for you. You thanked him and sat down. "Glad you didn't trip," he teased.

"Ha ha," you laughed sarcastically. "I know I'm clumsy, but have some faith."

The dinner went well, as you expected. Tom was always good at talking to strangers, so even when you had lulls in conversations, he was always able to jump in and eliminate the awkwardness. More than once you caught yourself staring at him as he spoke. He didn't just speak with his mouth, he spoke with his whole body. His eyes would light up and his hands would move and even his nose would scrunch up when he laughed. Your eyes did, however, always seem to find their way to his lips.
