Nick is done hiding his feelings for you. After his marriage failed he is ready to be with the girl he has always been in love with.

-----

The house is already buzzing when you arrive to Sophie and Joe's place. Music is playing in the living room, the huge sliding doors are open, connecting the inside to the back yard where the trees are decorated with lanterns and fairy lights. A long table is set on the terrace, the kids are running around the pool, jumping in and out of the water while their laughter never stops.

"Y/N! Hey!" Sophie cheers when she spots you and you embrace her in a tight hug.

"Sorry, I'm a bit late, I was stuck at work," you apologize for your delay, but she just shrugs it off.

"It's alright, you didn't miss anything. You want a drink?" she smiles at you pulling you to the table that is filled with different drinks.

You take a glass of wine and she does the same so you two can cheer to her birthday.

"Happy birthday, girl. Cheers to you!" You wink at her as you clink your glasses and both take a sip.

"Thank you," she smiles happily.

"Y/N, hey! Didn't know you'd be here!" Joe appears next to Sophie, gently putting an arm around his wife's waist.

"Of course she is here, she is my best friend!" Sophie tells him with a not too pleased look and he quickly rephrases himself.

"I meant I didn't know you'd make it."

"I was just caught up at work, but I wouldn't miss my bestie's birthday," you smile at Sophie bringing her smile back.

Someone calls out for the birthday girl and she excuses herself, leaving you alone with Joe.

"So how are you?" he casually asks.

"Everything is fine. Work is going great, I'm good," you say nodding to yourself.

"That's amazing." He takes a sib from the Corona in his hand before clearing his throat and hitting a more confidential tone with you. "Um, you know Nick is also coming, right?"

"I figured," you mumble into your wine glass, looking over the groups of people having fun in the backyard. "How is he doing?" you ask what's been bugging you for a while now.

"How anyone would be doing after a divorce," Joe scoffs. "He is keeping himself busy, tries to get himself over it. He wasn't planning on having a one year long marriage." He sighs sadly before turning to you, looking you in the eyes. "Maybe he'll tell you the whole story, because I know he didn't tell everything to us."

"What do you mean?" you ask with a puzzled look, but in the back of your head you kind of already know the answer, you just don't want to acknowledge it.

"You know what I mean," he says giving you a look before his eyes move to something behind you and then back to you. "I'll talk to you later, okay? Gotta mingle with the quests," he quickly replies before turning around and making his way to another group.

You drink your wine up and pour yourself another round before heading inside to take a quick tour to the bathroom. You need to collect your thoughts.

Knowing that you'd meet Nick any minute is just stressing you out. You haven't seen him in months and you are not sure how you feel about him. Before things got serious between him and Priyanka you had a fling with him. Maybe it's not the best word, but you never really addressed what it was. You went on a couple of dates, spent some very heated nights together before he kind of chickened out. He told you he needs time to think even though you didn't force anything on him. You gave him what he asked for only to be betrayed when he started going out with Priyanka and soon married her. It was just an absolute mess for you, because he never really gave you an explanation for his actions and you felt like you at least needed a closure from him. Two months into his marriage you finally built up the courage to confront him, but it just made things worse. He told you that he just couldn't figure out his feelings for you and didn't have the guts to face you again, this is why he never contacted you again. Then he talked about meeting Priyanka and that he found peace next to her, which just hurt you so bad. You were falling for him and hearing him talk about another woman was just not something you could put up with. You told him how big of an asshole he is and then left, haven't talked since. You've had plenty of time to think since then and you wouldn't call him an asshole now, you can't punish him for having feelings for someone else, but you still thought this was not the best way to deal with the situation from his side.
