It was dark, and the high school was closed. Two figures hopped onto the roof of the building and began unlocking the ceiling window that is connected to the gymnasium, "It's so cold up here. How can you not be freezing?" A teenage girl questions, wrapping her arms around herself as she stares at her male companion.

"You have not seen cold till you see where my dad lives. It's... don't be embarrassed. My parents are divorced. No big deal." The teenage boy answers, wrapping rope around his waist.

"I'm not embarrassed. Why don't you talk about your dad?" She steps closer to him, jumping on her feet, trying to stay warm.

"He doesn't like me to. It's complicated."

"Is he a spy?" She pressed.

The teen peers up at her, trying to devise a proper answer, "No, he... he works with toys and these... little people. Kids. Can we just do what we came here to do?" He tightened the rope and began stepping into the open window. "Sure." The girl huffs; crystalized air passes her lips.

"All right." The teen checks the gym before he adjusts his grip. The girl steps up to him, "Charlie, this is really dangerous. Someone could catch us at any moment." Her teeth chatter, but she smiles, "Kinda exciting."

"Well, you know, Danielle, I may not come out of this alive. So, in case we don't see each other again..." Charlie adjusts his weight, and the two lean toward each other. But, before Charlie can make his move, his foot slips, and he falls down the window.

"Aagghh!"

"Are you okay?" Danielle asked quietly, her hand on the window as she worryingly stared at Charlie.

"Oof!"

Charlie feels the rope tighten, jerking his body as he halts midair. He glimpsed up and gave Danielle a thumbs up to show he was okay. Charlie reaches into his pocket, grabs a paint can, and covers his mouth. Shaking the can, he starts spraying the wall. Danielle glances around herself as she watches Charlie work. By the time it reaches 11 pm, Charlie pauses for a moment and peeks up at Danielle with a grin, "Almost done."

"Okay. I'm not leaving." Danielle whispers as Charlie covers his mouth again and continues spraying the wall.

BANG!

Charlie stops spraying and glances to his right to see a ladder and someone climbing it up. The person stops next to the teen and taps her thumb on one of the steps.

"Hello, Charlie." She greeted with an unamused look.

"Hello, Principal Newman." Charlie stampers and peers down to see his old friend, Alfina Alvin, standing beside the ladder with disappointment written on her face. Charlie swallows and lowers himself to the ground. Once his feet landed on the floor, Principal Newman joined him with a glare. Alfina crosses her arms, tapping her foot in an unhappy rhythm.

"H-hi Alfina..."

The twenty-year-old adverts her eyes to the wall and stares at the painting of Principal Newman standing next to a Christmas tree with a red line crossed over it, "Charlie loved Christmas! So why is he doing this now?" The young woman wonders. Alfina and Principal Newman flashed each other a knowing look before gunning their eyes at the troubled teen, "Go home, Charlie," Alfina orders, "We will discuss this tomorrow."

"And give me the paint cans and rope." Principal Newman added, her hand stretched out in front of the teen. Charlie huffs and gives the items to his Principal. Alfina waves her hand at Charlie, signaling him to follow her. The teen obliged, his feet echoing in the vast, empty halls of the school.

Alfina opens the school doors, turns to Charlie, and points outside. Charlie glances at her, "Alfina, listen-"

"Don't. I don't know why you're doing this, Charlie. But it's not okay." The teen frowns, "Like it's not okay for you to ignore Bernard?!"

The young woman glared daggers and crossed her arms, "I've been shaking that stupid glass ball for eight years, calling for him to show up! Bernard never came to visit me! Hell, he never shook his snow globe to call for me!" Alfina snarled. She sucked in a deep breath, "I want to go back to the North Pole, and all I wanted was to see him again. It was never my fault. Never." Then, Alfina slammed the entrance shut with a bang and left Charlie standing there, stunned, next to the door. The young woman stood there silently, remembering the promise Bernard made and broke to her.

The memories of him getting hurt by Krampus and telling her that he loved her... finally made her believe that it was all a lie when he sent her home and never came back. "Why did you do it, Bernard? Why did you lie to me?" Alfina whispered as tears slid down her cheeks.

Taking a deep breath, Alfina turned around and walked down the vast and empty halls. Principal Newman was in her office throwing the paints and rope in the cabinet next to the door as Alfina walked in, "Everything okay, sweetheart?" The Principal noticed the depressed look in Alfina's eyes.

"I miss my old friend, Carol... Charlie brought him up." She mutters quietly, feeling tears form in her already red and swollen eyes. "Well, maybe one day you will see him again, Alfina." She assured the young twenty-year-old. The young woman turned to the Principal with a weak smile, "Probably, Carol," She whispered, "but I am not sure any more." Stepping up to the depressed woman, the Principal wrapped her arms around the girl's body, one hand gently brushing her hair and the other rubbing her back. Alfina plopped her head on the woman's shoulder and returned the hug. Alfina murmurs incoherently against Carol Newman's shoulder, making the woman look down at her.

"What was that, dear?"

Alfina removes her head and peers up at her, "Carol, he promised me eight years ago... but he broke it."

"He must have a good reason, sweetheart."

"What good reason?" Alfina muttered to herself, walking out of the room.
