CRUNCH!
CRUNCH!
CRUNCH!
"Hack!" The avalanche that buried Alfina for days broke loose, and the pregnant mother freed herself from underneath. "Cough, cough!" She brushes the snow out of her eyes and glances at her watch to see the day.
"Shit!"
It is two days till Christmas! How could she survive an avalanche in the cold and still live?!
KICK!
"Oh, Jingle Bells! The baby!" Alfina puts her hand on her abdomen, feeling the baby kick. She sighed with relief. The baby will be due any day now. She needs to find Bernard quickly! She stood up with her weapons clenched in her hands. Glancing up, she could see where the avalanche commenced.
"Oh, boy."
Just by looking up the mountain, she notices that she would still be days behind. Alfina remembered when Bernard would teleport from one place to another. "I wonder..." She whispered. She imagined herself just one day away from the cave by concentrating on where to go. The wind around her blew harder and knocked her down on her back. Alfina opens her eyes in frustration and turns her attention back to the mountaintop.
"Huh?"
Her mouth hung in shock. She could see the cave faintly from the top, and a tingle passed through her fingertips. It worked. Somehow, Alfina developed teleportation powers. "How is that possible? Is it because..." She gasps, "It is!" The baby. It had to be the baby. "With the baby being a part elf, he or she developed Bernard's powers!" Alfina guessed.
She reached into her cloak and pulled out another bread roll; devouring it, she stepped forward to the cave. Alfina tried to communicate with Bernard through telekinesis, but a strange power prevented her from doing so.
Dark power.
"Well, well, well, Krampus. Using dark Christmas magic to stop me by using an avalanche and preventing me from contacting Bernard? You are a fool." Alfina raged.
KICK!
"Right. Anger doesn't solve anything." Alfina paused in midstep and thought over what crossed her mind, "Wait a minute. What did make Krampus act this way in the beginning?"
The baby kicked harder, and Alfina winced. Instantly another image appeared before her.
"Dad! I can't believe you!"
"Shut up, Lily!"
Alfina gasped as she watched Krampus and a young girl stand over an unconscious elf. Bernard.
"If you continue doing this, I will never forgive you!"
"Oh, you're just like your mother. Always seeing the good in people!"
"Don't you dare hurt Santa's elves!"
"They're slaves!"
"No, they're not! You always told me to treat others the way I wanted to be treated! If you hurt them, then I'm leaving!"
Alfina blinked as the image disappeared. That was the answer. He became Krampus because his daughter left. If she had stayed, the elves wouldn't have been afraid, and Bernard wouldn't have been kidnapped. A frown plasters on her face. His daughter is long gone now. "Unless you sing my song..." A voice whispers in the wind, startling Alfina. "The voice that spoke, that's Lily!" The pregnant mother breathed. Her song? The wind blew through her hood, and Lily's voice echoed softly, "The song is called Darkside."
Alfina pushed herself, realising that the avalanche caused problems as she walked. Nevertheless, she might make it to the cave by mid-day Christmas Eve "Unless I walk all night." She grunted, glancing at the setting sun in annoyance. The dangers of walking at night made her uneasy. Anything could happen to her and the baby if she isn't careful and doesn't find shelter.
If she hid under a tree again, Krampus might summon another avalanche on her way. "The snow globe." She snarled. That's why he caused the avalanche; he's watching her. Alfina wondered if the baby had developed her powers to transform the arrows into blue and drift out of their body, traveling without being seen.
Closing her eyes and concentrating, Alfina drifted out of her body to the cave. As her spirit drifted inside, she paid close attention to where Bernard was held and if Krampus was watching. The rugged cave had water dripping from the walls, and a chamber appeared before her. She drifted inside, eyes widening at the sight of Bernard on the floor, a collar on his neck, only in undergarments.
The elf had shut his eyes, and his body shook violently. Tears pooled out of Alfina's eyes, staring at the poor elf before her, "Oh, B..." Her lips trembled at the sight. Her eyes traveled over his body, observing the yellow ooze on his infections. "How could he do this to Bernard!?" Alfina kneels, and her ghostly hand brushes Bernard's hair. His lips parted slightly, and he mumbled incoherently.
Alfina stood up and drifted out of the chamber to search for Krampus. Reaching another section, she finds Krampus sitting in his armchair with a grim expression. The snow globe on the table; the black snow swirled around, revealing no images of the Pole or her. Alfina studies Krampus' face. Not only was it intimidating, but sad.
Lily.
He's thinking of Lily, perhaps. Krampus stood up from his chair and paced around the room, "Lilui..." He whispered hoarsely. Alfina nodded her head, "His daughter." She drifts out of the chamber and reenters the room with Bernard. She sadly stares at him, "I'm coming, love." Alfina travels back down to her body and opens her eyes. Darkness had reached her, and the stars twinkled above her. She can't give up, not now. She decided to go a bit further in the night.
Tiredness kicked in, and Alfina rubbed her eyes with a yawn. She approached a large tree and began climbing up the massive branches. Once she found a good-sized unit, Alfina kept the gun and bow attached to her arrow bag and leaned against the trunk. She closed her eyes and allowed sleep to take over.
------------------------------------------------------------
The following day, Alfina jumped down the tree and checked the date. Christmas Eve. She threw her hood over her head and sprinted to the cave. As she traveled up almost to the top where the cave rested, the magic of the Escape Clause triggered.
