I wrote this because I got Put Your Head on my Shoulder stuck in my head. Short read btw.
"You're gonna hold this over my head?" I asked, annoyed at that stupid smirk Cassidy wore. He made a small bet with me, a 'wager' as he calls it. This cowboy always has Lady Luck on his side, I should've known the odds would be in his favor. But, having him buy me the best and most expensive pastries around town was a tempting deal. He knows I love desserts, and that I've been eyeing that bakery for a while now; ever since Angela told me about them. Unfortunately, Cassidy had a deal of his own.
"Just might," he winked as he leaned against the balcony outside the worn-out hotel. The golden hour highlights his cheekbones, turning his shaggy brown hair blonde and his dark eyes amber. Cassidy relaxed his broad shoulders, having the confidence of a man that knows how good-looking he is. Not carrying the heavy and tense weight of insecurity. A cigar hanged loosely over his lips, a small river of smoke blowing up into the air. A man without shame, without worry, without fear. The kind of guy who laughs at such things. And I was feeling all three of those words combined.
My heart was beating out of my chest as my throat grew dry. "Do you really want me to do this? Couldn't you ask for something else? Like a beer or twenty bucks?" That's normally what he bets for when it comes to rookies who think they can hit more targets than him. All of them lose their cash and beer, along with their pride.
Cassidy chuckled, "If I'm not mistaken, you were the one that started the bet." His metallic prosthetic hand pulled the cigar out of his mouth, tapping away the cinders. "You said that you could shoot more null sector bots than me on the mission. Not my fault I outshot you by one."
I growled, "You used deadeye- you cheated!"
He tilted his head back and laughed at the wind. "From what I remember, special abilities weren't off the table."
I sighed, "I'll buy you that top shelf whiskey you like if you call off the bet." My head turned away from him, arms crossed as a line of defense. It might be a chicken for backing out of the bet, but if so then I'm a proud chicken. I'm not gonna follow through on something so-
"As much as I'd like that, it ain't what I asked you to do." He took a step closer to me, "Don't know why you're being shy about it. I've heard you sing before."
I jumped up, "What?!"
Cassidy rolled his eyes playfully, "Can't say that the walls in the communal showers are thick. I was walking by them late at night, your voice echoed through the halls."
My brows furrowed, "How do you know it was me?"
He giggled, "Cause you almost fell halfway into the song."
My eyes widened, yep I remembered that night. I thought I was gonna have to hobble my way to the medbay soaking wet in my pajamas for half a second before I caught myself. I looked away from his brown eyes, "Cassidy, I'm not that good of a singer. You'll have better luck listening to Reinhardt singing karaoke."
Of course, any excuse went into one ear and out the other. This cowboy was stubborn, and there was no way I could get him to compromise on something like a deal- especially since I agreed to his terms. Curse past me.
He hummed in thought, "I could lay off you, but you'd still owe me a song."
My head lowered in defeat, he suggested that I can postpone this embarrassment for the next day? He's gonna hold this over my head for eternity.
A warm hand touches my shoulder, "All I'm asking is to hear your voice. Don't care if you're no Mariah Carey or Celine Dion. If you can give me that, I promise I won't ask ever again. Once will be enough."
Blush crept up on my cheeks, although pushy he was being kinda nice. It's not something materialistic he wants from me, just a memory. I looked at him dead in the eyes, "Give me your phone."
He looks at me puzzled, but pulls out his phone from his pocket and puts it in my hand, "May I ask what you wa-"
"Put in your password," I turn the phone screen to face him and he hesitantly types in the code, opening up his Home Screen.
"Darling, can you please tell me wh-"
I went to the voice memos app, shushing him as I turn on the recording. My eyes looked directly at him, holding the mic of his phone like a microphone.
"Put your head on my shoulder
"Hold me in your arms, baby
Squeeze me oh so tight
Show me that you love me, too"
His mouth dropped, along with any amount of cool he had. It was hard not to laugh at him then and there; but I continued. Reaching the second verse,
"Put your lips next to mine, dear
Won't you kiss me once, baby
Just a kiss goodnight , maybe
You and I will fall in love"
My finger hit the record button again, calling it quits on the song. It wasn't the exact one I was singing in the shower, but it was stuck in my head all day. I handed it back to him, while he looked frozen up and blushing like a fool. I snickered at him, "So much for acting all cool, cowboy."
Cassidy shrugged, trying to regain any composure he had before. "That wasn't the rest of the song. I think you owe the audience another encore." He was desperately trying to charm me, yet it just didn't stick with him acting all flustered.
I laughed, "You said I could sing, you didn't say for how long- and you didn't say I had to finish the song."
He exhaled, "Guess so. Although I doubt it will be much different."
"Why?"
Cassidy smiled, "Cause you've been stuck in my head for a while now."
Now it was my turn to get all flustered, watching him slowly walk away before turning his back to me, "How's about another bet, Sweetheart?"
I scoffed, "Really, now? Tonight hasn't been hard enough for the both of us?"
He titled up the brim of his hat, "I bet you like me. If I'm right, I'll bring you on a date next Friday."
"What if I don't," I teased with a raised brow.
Cassidy chuckled, "We both know you do." He moved his hat over his face, walking away with his spurs chiming with each step.
I rolled my eyes, he caught me. "Pick me up at 7, Cowboy!" I called out to him.
He threw me a thumbs up, chuckling to himself. His laugh was contagious, as I found myself laughing along with him. How ridiculous, funny, and exciting at the same time.
