Narrator POV:
The new Overwatch was up and running yet again, despite Soldier:76's resentment to the idea. He joined only to keep a watchful eye over Winston and the other old Overwatch members. Being there was the only thing that kept his mind at ease, just knowing that they were safe. Plus, he could find more research on Talon here than he would on the streets.
It was any normal day, Soldier would get up around 4 in the morning like he did everyday. From there, he would run a few miles, eat some breakfast, and head to the shooting range for practice. Some would call his regimen intense, he calls it keeping the edge of his blade sharp incase he has a run in with Talon again. One relaxed day could throw the old soldier off and he'd be back at square one, the day he lost everything he cared about.
76 readied his gun, lining his vision with the target: a single dot in the center of a blank sheet of paper. His blue eyes squinted into focus, although hidden by a red vizor. He imagined that dot was the person behind the fall of his family, killing hundreds of agents that were new and old. The dot shifted itself into the former friend he had known too well, but now was a complete different person. Cloaked in black, skull mask, and two guns in his hands. 76 felt a fire in his gut, his eyebrows knit together as he stared at his imaginary opponent.
"Are you gonna shoot the paper or do you just like looking at it?"
The Soldier turned around to see a cowboy leaning against the door of the room. Jesse McCree. Cowboy hat and all. A man the Soldier knew as a former gang member Reyes took into Blackwatch. He never was fond of him, McCree always seemed so relaxed and never take anything seriously. 76 was the opposite, only because he had to be. The last thing he needs to hear right now is one of McCree's remarks.
"I was about to, until you interrupted me." 76's tone cold as ice.
"Hey now, don't get mad at me. I was just coming by here to train, not to get yelled at." McCree's hands were up in the air.
McCree came into the renewed Overwatch about a week ago, still adjusting to the new environment and the low-profile missions. It wasn't too hard for him considering his job as a bountyhunter, but every agent knew not to bother the soldier during his routine. Call it bravery or simple lack of social understanding, but McCree remained un-phased by 76's death glare. He wore his lazy grin and look at the soldier with his crescent shaped eyes. All it did was made the soldier's gut feel like a fried egg.
"Alright." 76 looked away from the cowboy's gaze. His mask suddenly feeling a little hotter than before. Watching McCree train seemed more appealing to him than training himself. It was only to see if he was any good, if his aim was sharper than it was seven years ago. The soldier turned his attention to McCree as the cowboy settled himself in the station next to him, preparing his six shooter.
"Looks like I got an audience today." McCree smirked as he got into his stance.
"If you call one old man an audience."
"I'll take what I can get." He replied with a wink. Six bullets fired from McCree's peacekeeper at the dead center of the paper. The Soldier growled, he always knew McCree for a showoff. Looks like seven years only groomed his ego.
"You trying to impress me?"
McCree chuckled at 76, "Just practice, sir. In fact, I propose a bet."
"A bet? Your placing a bet on an old soldier with more experience than what you've learned from Blackwatch and bounty hunting?"
"Well, I'm feeling like today's a lucky day. Plus, it's better than you just staring at me while I practice."
"This kid's idea of fun is to make a bet out of everything. No wonder Reyes and him got along." 76 thought.
"What's the bet?" The Soldier gave in, he knows he'll win the bet anyways.
"Who ever aims off the target's center pays for the winner's lunch."
"Fine." He readies his positions until McCree tuts at him.
"We gotta shake on it, otherwise it ain't a fair deal."
"Really?"
"How else would I know you're not cheating?" McCree extends his right hand out in the middle of the sections. "Let the best man win."
McCree grins as 76 shook his open hand, then fades as they both ready their positions.
"You wanna to go first, old soldier?"
"Just to shut you up."
The soldier fired straight at the center of the paper, McCree replied with a whistle.
"Not too bad for an old man."
"I'll take that as a compliment. Let's see if the cowboy get up is just a costume."
McCree laughs, "I hope you have 20/20 vision." A bullet pierces the center, without McCree looking at it. The Soldier tries to hides how surprised he was, only knowing the McCree that was all talk and no walk. At least now, he can talk and walk at the same time. That and he has ages pretty well... His hair messy but it suited him somehow... And his beard made his cheekbones chiseled... His cocky grin that the Soldier hated seem to make him feel all weird... Nope. Not today. He's just playing around, trying to be top gun like he always has since Reyes brought him in. And 76 doesn't like to play games.
76 scoffs, "You didn't say we had to do any tricks."
"I didn't. Do you want to show me one?" McCree leans on the divider of the shooting booth with a shit-eating grin.
"I don't need party tricks to get the job done." The Soldier shoots at the center target once more.
"Ah come on! With all that experience you never bothered to learn something to woo the girls?" McCree readies his gun to shoot.
"I don't impress girls, I impress men." BANG! The bullet hit the side of the target, not the direct center. McCree groans in anger, he lost the bet.
The Soldier walked out of his booth, towards the exit before stopping, "You need to learn to focus on the target. You can't hit the target and hit on me all at the same time."
McCree's face went as red as his serape, he thought he was being discreet about it but oh boy he was wrong. He tilted his hat to hide his shame as the Soldier let out a chuckle.
"I'll see you at 11:30." The metal door closes, 76 walking into the hallway with a smile hidden by his mask.
