Mark Tuan wasn't one to remember dates or places or events. But if he'd bothered to keep a diary, then today would have gone down as one of the worst days in his twenty-five year old life. The evidence to support that statement was abundant. Mark had woken up in the morning to find that his long-time girlfriend of the past two years had packed up her things and left their apartment. It wasn't a complete surprise. The spark between them had been fading for a long time now. They barely saw each other and spending time together was more of a routine than something either of them looked forward to.

Still, the note that she'd left on the kitchen counter had been unexpected. While she had explained that she was going on a vacation to clear her mind, and that she would be moving in with a friend when she returned, one particular part of her letter rang repeatedly in Mark's head.

I would rather die than spend the rest of my life living with a stone wall. How can a human being be without any depth at all? You scare me, Mark. I think you're hollow on the inside.

Mark had scoffed and crumpled the note, tossing it aside. He wasn't entirely disappointed. To be honest, he had been contemplating how to bring up the topic of ending their relationship and it was easier for him that she had done it first. He was hollow? She had been the shallow one, only dating him for his good looks and money. Perhaps that was why Mark had never been able to respect her.

At work, the atmosphere was toxic. The company recently had a fall-out with a huge client and they were still struggling to deal with the aftermath. All the employees Mark walked past either had their eyes fixed on their laptops, or were talking on the phone in panicked voices. Mark sat at his desk and opened up his email to find at least a hundred things that needed to be done. He spent the rest of the day working in silence and trying to fix all the problems, only to have the boss call him into his office before the end of the day and inform him that the company was downsizing. Mark wasn't being fired yet, but according to the boss he should be prepared for any eventuality.

Mark left work silently. He hadn't particularly liked working at that company anyway. Being fired didn't sound all that bad. He would just have to wait and see what happened.

The bar that he usually went to after work was closed for renovation. He didn't feel like going anywhere new, so he went to the local convenience store and bought a six-pack of beer and a packet of chips. Mark sat down at one of the empty tables outside and cracked open a can of beer, taking a long and refreshing sip from it.

That was when he saw you.

To be perfectly honest, Mark hadn't noticed you at first. He was looking in your direction of course, you were sitting at the table next to his with your own can of beer and a half-eaten cup ramen. You were twirling a pen in your hand as you stared up at the sky and mumbling to yourself. Mark watched you absent-mindedly while you scribbled down a few words and then tore the page, ripping it apart into tiny little pieces. You stood up to go throw the pieces in the trashcan and on your way back, your eyes met Mark's.

You changed track, walking over to his table instead of your own.

"Hi. Do you have a few minutes to talk?" you asked him casually. Mark stared up at you, actually focusing on you for the first time. You were an extremely pretty woman that looked around the same age as him. Your hair was tied back in a bun and there were more pens sticking out of it while your soft lips were pressed together. You looked at him expectantly, waiting for an answer.
