You weren't normally this distracted.
You were the type who could focus on three things at once and still maintain your A-plus grades; in fact it was because you were so good at studying that you were there, though you wished to be anywhere else in that moment.
A few times a week you tutored at the university library, meeting with people who were referred to you for help with their essay writing. You liked the work; it felt productive and gave you extra credits towards your resume. The pay was merely a bonus, and it never ate into your own study time, thankfully.
There was one issue though, and it happened every Thursday.
At first you hadn't noticed him, too intent on marking up the errors in the draft you were editing for a student, or suggesting a better way of structuring the argument. It was when you met with a student who read at a snail's pace over your corrections, that you had looked up that one time, your eyes lazily drifting around the library, and that's when you first saw him.
It wasn't hard to miss him, his hair being unnaturally silver blonde in a sea of russet browns, caramels and darker shades. It made his skintone warmer, and you smiled, before returning your attention back to the girl now ready for your advice.
You hadn't expected to notice him again, but over the course of two months, you would find yourself dreading Thursday afternoons, because of the same boy distracting you.
The thing that bothered you most was why.
He wasn't your typical choice in men, with his unique, slanted eyes and long face, but he was handsome. This wasn't enough in your logical mind to be a reason for why you were so intrigued by the fellow student; there were plenty of attractive people on campus that you hadn't so much as given an extra look at unless you weren't studying. You had always prided yourself on education first, socialising second, and stuck to this rule throughout your university degree.
Until now.
You had questioned other things, citing curiosity as the next reason. After all, he did the same thing every time. Most students would have books piled around them, cramming in all the information they could. Others would have laptops and tablets as an addition, the sound of keys tapping being the most audible background noise within the study area. But he only ever had four items – a sketchbook, pencil, eraser and his cell-phone with earbuds attached. At first you had concluded he was an artist, and using the students around him as inspiration. But by the fourth session of taking quick glances over at him, you had found he would move in his chair very slightly, the movements broken down and then put together a little. He would then pick up his pencil and start scribbling whatever that had meant to him.
This left you confused at how he could be so oblivious to the onlookers at his static movement, only focusing on himself. Curiosity was ruled out, and this left you perplexed, annoyed that you couldn't solve the answer to the mysterious boy.
Today was instantly different from your typical Thursday though.
For one, he was normally there before you arrived, sitting a couple of tables over. As you set up, you felt a small sense of hope that today would be your most productive Thursday since discovering the silver haired boy. Your mood improved as your anxiety slipped away, smiling up at the girl you were meeting with today as she arrived for your session. You were deeply focussed on her essay about Renaissance influence in art and society that you barely noticed movement around you, the chair scooting out beside you a moment later.
