You looked into cures for your disease. It was possible to surgically remove the flowers, but you knew the cost. To remove the flowers is to remove the love that created them. When you thought about losing your love for Mark, you knew there was no choice. Deep in your chest, next to the roots and the desperation, a small sliver of hope had settled in. There was still a part of you that hoped that maybe, just maybe, Mark could someday love you back.

You knew that this hope was going to kill you, and you were going to let it.

Pairing: Mark x Reader

Genre: Angst with a happy ending; Hanahaki disease!AU

Words: 5k+

Warning: Mentions of blood, choking, and general respiratory issues. I tried not to make this too gross, but those of you familiar with Hanahaki disease know what you're in for.

Unrequited love is a funny sort of thing. Sometimes, all it takes is a small seed of doubt to take root in your chest, and somehow all of the missed glances and wayward comments you wouldn't have paid a moment's notice to turns into overthinking every detail and then some, nurturing that seed until it blooms into something big and thriving and terrible.

You weren't exactly sure when your seeds first took root, but you knew exactly when they first started to sprout.

.

You always loved those nights when you got to just hang out with all of the boys. These hangouts were fewer and farther between now, what with how busy and hectic their lives have become. But nights like this, where you get to all sit together and remember what it's like to be normal and young, are all the more sweet for their rarity.

Jackson had said something that made Youngjae thump his arm, and the rest of you snickered as the two of them squabbled for a bit. When they finally broke apart, Jackson smoothed his hair back, looking suitably ruffled. In a bid to preserve whatever dignity that man has left, he eyed everyone in the circle before deciding who would be the butt of the next joke. His eyes narrowed in on Mark.

"Hey, Mark," Jackson said, inelegantly changing the topic. "When are you gonna get a girlfriend, man? Interviewers spend so much time asking me about this, but really they should be asking you."

"What?" Mark sat up a bit straighter, eyebrows raising. The others broke out in snickers again, but your smile froze on your face. For a reason you weren't quite ready to put into words, you were suddenly very interested in this conversation.

On the other side of Mark, Yugyeom smirked and jabbed a finger in Mark's side, making him grunt and curl in on himself.

"Yeah, hyung," teased Yugyeom. "When are you gonna get a girlfriend? If you're having trouble meeting girls, why not try Y/N? At least you wouldn't have to worry about trying to make a good first impression." As the group broke back out into giggles and sly comments, you forced yourself to relax and play along. Even though you couldn't see it, you knew your smile looked forced.

For his part, Mark had straightened back up, his face unreadable even as he flicked his hair out of his eyes.

"What do I need a girlfriend for?" he asked, barely glancing at you before turning back to Jackson. "Besides, I think it's worth wondering why the interviewers keep bothering you about it, Jackson. Is there something you're not telling us?"

You didn't hear Jackson's remark over the pounding of your heart in your ears. You knew your eyes were too wide, too honest as you looked at Mark's profile. He didn't look back at you.
