"Even though she and I can't see the string, we're really happy. I'm glad I found her."

Mingyu rests his head in his hands, hearts in his eyes, unbeknownst to him that with each word he says, your eyes struggle to contain the tears threatening to spill over.

If he could see your face, he'd more than likely, like the idiot he is, run to your side and brush away your tears, a way too intimate gesture for people who are 'just friends'. Luckily, your back is turned, and the tear stains on your jacket sleeve are subtle enough to be mistaken for splashed water, from the dishes you're currently washing.

"I'm just happy you're happy, Ming."

You place the last dish on the drying rack, drying your hands on a clean towel. You watch the delicate string attached to your pinky sway, in sync with Mingyu, who's swinging his hands back and forth as he sinks further into the recliner in the living room.

"Aish, don't be so bitter, you'll find your soulmate soon! Or, er, they'll find you. I forget. Can you see it? The string?"

You glance away from your finger, shoving a hand into the pocket of your jacket. "If I could, I'd let you know."

You don't have the courage to tell Mingyu that he's the one on the other side of your string, that you're the one he's been looking for. Not when he's so happy with someone else.

"Are you stupid?"

"Yes, I am Jihoon, thank you for reminding me," you mutter, sipping loudly on your drink to further annoy him. He makes a face at you, cursing quietly while Soonyoung hums, playing with the angry male's fingers.

"I don't get it," Soonyoung shrugs, fingers running over the golden ring on Jihoon's finger, cheeks pink and full of pure admiration, "I told Jihoonie that he was my soulmate once I could see the string."

"That's because you're Soonyoung, you'd tell a stranger your entire life story if they asked." Jihoon snorts, because he knows it's true, but recollects himself when he sees the offense in Soonyoung's pouty expression.

He clears his throat. "Well, would you rather be honest with Mingyu, or continue to live a lie?"

"I want him to be happy, Ji. What he doesn't know won't hurt him."

"But it's hurting you, (F/N)!" Jihoon nearly yells, capturing the attention of a few other tables. Soonyoung stands and quietly apologizes for his fiancee while Jihoon continues to glare daggers at you.

"I care about you like family. I can't stand to watch you sacrifice your entire future of happiness because you're concerned about his relationship with a different girl. A girl who isn't even his fucking soulmate." Jihoon's expression softens as your eyes grow wet, fingers slightly trembling around your cup. "You can't run away from fate."

"I know, but it's worth a try. I'm thinking of moving back home, Ji. I can't stay here and pretend to be happy for much longer."

"You're taking this way too far. He's not going to let you leave without an explanation." Jihoon lets out a heavy breath, looking out the window at the darkened sky, city lights bright and twinkling against the darkness.
