"You can't physically see what I left with you because it's not something you can see. It's something you can only feel. I left you my heart, Y/N and that's something I had to come back for but now that I'm back for it, I think I'll leave it with you."

Your hands moved swiftly across the paper as you sketched the outline of the morning sun coming up over the horizon. Carefully you gripped the pencil so your stroke wasn't too dark and later you could add watercolors to the small piece of work. This was one drawing you weren't doing for somebody else for the first time in a long time.
After finishing school, painting became something you did only for others and not for yourself. It became your way of life and you didn't have time to do it for fun anymore. To say you had lost your passion was only half of it. Even now as you drew the sunrise, you could feel the tension in your fingertips and you gripped the pencil a little too tight.
Thoughts flowed through your mind and that was the last thing you needed when you drew. You needed to be free and without concern but yet here you were, worrying about everything your mind could muster up.
Your parents who were starting to lose their health, your ex-boyfriend who all but physically ripped your heart apart, and your sister who had become a young mother. There were too many things for you to worry about right now and when your worries showed through your artwork, it made for dark pictures that weren't the slightest bit pleasing.
You pushed your thoughts away. You couldn't worry about what you couldn't control – it would just make you sick.
Letting out a shaky breath, you worked on calming techniques for several moments.
The moment you felt a slight loss of tension, you heard it.
Bark.
You jumped slightly and felt your grip tighten around the thin pencil. You sighed and stopped the movement of your hand momentarily. Trying to gain back the barely there concentration you had, you let out a slow breath but as you moved the pencil again-
Bark.
The line you were drawing had ended up several shades too dark and way too curvy. You felt yourself start to shake but you tried to keep calm.
The drawing could be fixed. It could be salvaged somehow, you told yourself but the second the lead touched the paper, another bark sounded and the pencil in your hands snapped.
The barking was consistent after that and you threw your pencil down and crumbled the paper up in your hands.
Quickly grabbing your purse, you headed out of your apartment to help clear your mind and maybe help your drawing block. And well, to keep you from strangling your neighbor for his dog having the worst timing possible.
It was just your luck that when you needed silence the most, you couldn't get it. Maybe it was karma since in the past you craved anything but silence.
--
You had lived there two weeks and you had gone through a total of fifteen pencils. Typically, your pencils would last months to years but yet, thanks to your neighbor and their dog, you had spent countless dollars on brand new supplies.
Not only that but the first pencil you had broken was one of your favorites. You felt like pencils needed to be broken in and instead of having the chance to do that, you've just been breaking them instead.
