I never expected that his father would be so approachable and kind. Akala ko isa siya sa nakikita kong nasa palabas na malamig sa mga taong kasama ng kanyang mga anak, pero nagkamali ako. Everytime when I talk to Claudius father I suddenly remember my Papa. Sa panlabas niyang anyo ay mapapansin mong mayaman talaga siya at mukhang malamig at strikto na tao, ngunit kapag makausap mo siya ay parang kilala ka na niya kung sino ka.
"Since when did your father pass away?" He asked on my second day in their house, it was a lazy afternoon. Nasa patio nila ako habang umiinom ng juice. Claudius is taking his afternoon sleep habang ako ay tinawag ng kanyang Papa rito para kausapin. Claudius father is a nice company, he laughs lightly and he commented positively while I talk.
Naalala ko talaga bigla si Papa, ang pinagkaiba lang nila ay malakas na tumawa si Papa, nagsusulpot si Papa ng negative or positive jokes sa mga pinagsasabi ko.
I breathe a silent sigh. "Last two weeks.." sabi ko sa mahinang boses.
He shifted his gaze towards me. "Oh? That's not too long. Hope you're catching up for your lost, dear."
I smiled tightly at Claudius' father. "Better than before po.."
He smiled at me with knowing emotions passed his eyes. He looks pleased upon my answer.
“That’s good to hear then. How's my son? Did he give you a hard time when he's hiding?”
Mula sa tanong iyon ay unti-unting nag-flashback sa akin ang mga nangyayari ng simula kong makilala si Max. I was in a dangerous bicycle run because of him. That's how we got close.
“Well…” Sabi ko at nag-alinlangan pang sabihin sa kanya.
He just smiled and nodded. “Go on, dear…”
“Well, uhmm, he tried to do a business but fail. Nagbebenta po siya noon ng candy nang nakita ko siya. He's selling the candy in a unacceptable price.” Napangiwi ako roon.
Mas lalong lumawak ang ngisi ng Papa ni Claudius. Na para bang may hinihintay na nakakatawang sagot.
“Magkano?”
“Singko-isa.” I frowned. “He tried to scam me, sir.”
He suddenly let out a hearty laugh.
I just smiled a bit.
“He also got me in trouble when he was caught stealing amount of money in a tatto shop. Hindi aabot sa isang daan ang kanyang kinuha ngunit hinabol siya ng mga lalaking nasa tattoo shop. I was in the sari-sari store at that time. My borrowed bicycle was parked sa gilid ng pader. Nagulat na lamang ako ng kinuha niya iyon at umambang mag-bike. He successfully get a hold of it pero hinabol ko siya at pinatigil, lalo na dahil hindi sa akin iyong bike. And that's when I got involved in his dangerous trouble. Nasali ako dahil gusto kong kunin ang bike. We ran away from the guys who was holding and aiming his guns at us. Nagtago kami sa isang eskinita na kung saan pagkatapos ng paghahabol ay nasira ang bike…”
Mas lalong humalakhak ang papa ni Claudius sa sinabi ko hanggang sa inuubo na siya. May nagbigay ng tubig sa kanya ngunit umiling lamang siya habang nakangiti. Iniinda ang kaunting ubo.
“I never thought this time would come. My son Claudius has really been hiding something from me. He really likes to get in trouble.”
My lips curved into a small smile.
"So...this is a blunt question—" sabi niya at humarap sa akin, Claudius father slightly narrowed his eyes at me. "—but are you going to marry my son?"
